In April 2016, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a request for public comment regarding the modernization of certain business and financial disclosure requirements under Regulation S-K as part of its ongoing “Disclosure Effectiveness Initiative.” Under Regulation S-K, reporting companies must disclose non-financial information that is material to investors.

The subject of human rights has long been the black sheep of the corporate responsibility (CR) “family” of issues. Respecting and promoting human rights can be a challenge if companies don’t have insight into their human rights practices, impacts and policies.

Similar to a carbon footprint, which measures a company’s greenhouse gas emissions, the human rights footprint of companies has been scrutinized for many years with addressing such issues as slavery in their supply chains, lawsuits, consumer pressure, and occasionally of their own volition. Business’ human rights footprints should include at the very least their labour practices and supply chain processes, but also the financial support that they knowingly or unknowingly (risk management) could be supporting oppressive regimes through commercial engagement.

Businesses embarking on human rights due diligence for the first time often assume that they need to focus only on those human rights which are associated with risks in their particular sector. However, it is unwise to choose only one human right and exclude the others from the due diligence process. Human rights are interrelated and often go hand-in-hand.

It’s easy to think the battle for LGBT rights is almost over in this country.
Public opinion has changed rapidly over the past decade, and the U.S. Supreme Court is widely expected to make same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states when it rules this June. But it’s premature to declare LGBT rights a settled issue. Much like the civil rights movement after the passage of major legislation, many issues in the struggle for equality remain unsettled.
In fact, businesses may find the latest battlefront on their doorstep.

Education is a human right – it is the key that unlocks the door to all other rights, including economic equality, for millions of minority and low-income students. Beyond that, education is the unacknowledged engine that runs the American economy on both the individual and national level. Fueling that engine through scholarships secures human rights, empowers individuals, and creates wealth that has long-lasting generational impact.
