In the realm of business, “green” efforts are constantly molding and changing. As our understanding of global climate change shifts, so does our techniques to combat it.
After last year’s announcement from the United Nations that revealed their 15 year plan for Sustainable Development Goals, many businesses took the announcement to heart. The focus was shifting, this time to reducing waste and working on a more global level to make a dedicated effort to improve practices.

IKEA Sustainability Officer Steve Howard practically shook the earth when he announced early this year that the home furniture market had reached “peak stuff.” New product sales, he said, had already seen their heyday and were now entering a decline. And he wasn’t just speaking off the cuff—IKEA is currently positioning their business towards a circular economy while still hoping to double sales by 2020.
That would undoubtedly represent a watershed moment in sustainability—producing goods like home furnishings shrinks the world’s resources considerably. But the public’s desire for disposable, fashionable goods is what grew IKEA into the massive furniture provider it is today. So why would the company be considering such a sharp deviation from that business model?

Most of the products we buy and consume are bound to reach their ‘end of life’ at some stage. To date, business and industry have customarily followed an economic model that is built on the premise of ‘take-make-consume and dispose’.

We all live in “mediocracies” whatever our country’s form of government. We live in “attention economies” where brands, keywords and media trump politics, economics and culture in what Marshall McLuhan called “our global village”. Today we see countries following Britain’s branding in the 1990s as “Cool Britannia,” such as China’s promoting “The Chinese Dream” and the “circular economy”.
