A new nationwide study examining work life and jobs with meaning finds that 65% of university students expect to make an impact on causes and issues they care about in their future job.

The study, Net Impact’s Talent Report: What Workers Want in 2012, is a nationally representative sample of college-educated workers in three generations—Millennials, GenerationXers and Baby Boomers - and current college students. To read the executive summary or the entire survey, please visit www.netimpact.org/whatworkerswant.

Critical findings include:

Demand for “impact jobs:” Two thirds (65%) of workers and students said that “the potential to contribute to society” and “a job that will make the world a better place” is very important to them, with about one in four deeming this to be essential.

Most university students (65%) expect to be able to make some positive social or environmental difference through their work.

‘Having a job where they can make an impact on causes and issues that are important to them’, is something the vast majority of undergraduate and graduate students want out of their work life. Seven-in-ten say this is “very important” to them, which includes 31 percent who say it is “essential.” “Impact jobs” connect to job satisfaction: Twice as many employees who say they have an opportunity at their job to make a positive social or environmental impact on the world report being very satisfied with their jobs compared to people who are in jobs that don’t have such an opportunity.

“For the first time, we have data that shows a direct connection between job satisfaction and making a difference at work,” said Net Impact CEO, Liz Maw. “Employees today don’t want to check their values at the door when they arrive at their jobs, and the ability to live and work with strong social meaning is clearly important to them.”

Job attributes:

The survey identified the five top job attributes, of 16 presented to rank, that workers want from their worklife: a good work/life balance, a positive work environment, good compensation, having interesting work to do and job security.

Cliff Zukin, the Rutgers Professor who directed the study commented, “We may be looking at the end of the millennial generation, a casualty of the recession. It seems unusual for those in their early 20s to so highly value job security given how self-confident and entrepreneurial the Millennial generation has seemed to be. It may well be that today’s university students are the follow-up to the Millennial generation, and may more closely resemble the GenX generation, which came of age in a climate of economic insecurity.”

Students Facing Future Workplace Reality: Undergraduates are under no illusions about how difficult it will be to find a job when they graduate into an economy where unemployment is close to nine percent.

Just one in ten students think it is going to be ‘very easy’ to find a job, and only another 23 percent say it will be ‘somewhat easy.’ Nearly half (46%) say finding a job will be “somewhat difficult,” with another 13 percent believing that it will be “very difficult.”

When a follow up question is posed asking them to rank how difficult it will be to find a job they really want to do, just under a quarter think it will be either ‘very’ or ‘somewhat easy.’ Just 11 percent believe they will have a great deal of choice in jobs when they graduate college.

Two thirds of the undergraduates and three quarters of the graduate students surveyed say they expect to owe money for school or other reasons when they finish. The median debt for those juniors and seniors saying they will owe money is $25,000.

Money and Meaning for Tomorrow’s Leaders: Despite current employment outlooks and a lack of real-world experience, graduating students still maintain a desire to work for and with purpose, even if means a smaller paycheck. Of the students surveyed:

Over half (58%) would take a 15 percent pay cut to ‘work for an organization whose values are like my own.’

Almost half (45%) would take a 15 percent pay cut to ‘have a job that makes a social or environmental impact on the world.’

Over a third (35%) would take a 15 percent pay cut to ‘work for a company committed to corporate and environmental sustainability.’

“Young people in college and grad school see making a social impact as a critical part of their career,” says Maw. “Even in a depressed job market, these resilient and optimistic students are leading with their values.”

The study was conducted to investigate what workers want out of their jobs in the year 2012; it examined demand for impact jobs, and how the youngest generation of workers might differ from their older counterparts. The survey also set out to consider how life goals, job satisfaction, 'impact jobs' in practice and citizen activities rank in importance, value and fulfillment for current and upcoming generations.

A total of 1,726 respondents were surveyed in a statistically representative sample of Americans who had graduated from a four-year college and were working full-time when the study was conducted between February 15 and 18, 2012. The sampling error for the overall study is approximately + 3 percent.

Additional Survey Highlights

Workers:

Around 15 percent of workers say they will definitely have a social or environmental impact through their job over the next few years, with another 31 percent saying they probably will.

Students:

A strong majority of students (72%) have a life goal to have a job that they can make an impact on causes and issues important to them.

Female students were more likely to select government, small business, or nonprofit jobs as their first choice, with male students more likely to select corporate jobs.

Female students are more likely to say that a company that prioritizes corporate responsibility is more important to their ideal job over male students by 60 percent v. 40 percent.

Having a positive work environment / positive culture ranks as the top quality students seek in an upcoming job (91%), followed by job security (90%) with financials (compensation/benefits) in third place at 87 percent.

A focus on Millennials:

Just four-in-ten Millennial graduates of four-year colleges report being firmly on their desired career path; a similar amount believe they are in jobs that will lead to a career path, and 20 percent say they are not on the way to a career in their current job—it’s just something to get them by.

Millennials are following GenX in eschewing the ballot box. Whereas 77 percent of Boomers say they have recently cast a ballot, just 56 percent of Xers and 46 percent of Millennials have. Current university undergraduate and graduate students look to do no better.

All respondents:

A majority of all respondents (65%) believe that they have a personal responsibility for getting involved to make things better for society.

A majority of respondents (76%) believe that most companies only care about how much profit they can make, vs. trying to balance profit with the public interest.

About Net Impact’s Talent Report: What Workers Want in 2012: The study, conducted in February 2012, consisted of four samples. 1) Juniors, seniors and graduate students currently enrolled in four-year colleges (n=431); Millennials (n=807); GenX (n=230); Baby Boomers (n=258). Each was configured to be an independent probability sample of the respective groups. The survey was fielded by GfK Custom Research using Knowledgepanel. More details can be found in the methodological appendix of the formal report – www.netimpact.org/whatworkerswant

In addition to employee surveys, a group of managers and senior leaders from these four organizations will participate in Great Place to Work’s Giftwork® leadership training.
“A company’s business purpose is more powerful when it aligns with the company’s potential for broader societal impact,” said Adrian Lajtha, Accenture’s chief leadership officer. “This report reflects our commitment and actions—guided by our strong culture and core values—to bring positive change for today and for the future.”

Accenture uses Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines as a foundation for its reporting approach and has self-declared this report at Application Level B, as checked by GRI. The report serves as Accenture’s third Communication on Progress to the UN Global Compact, which the company signed in January 2008 and documents its progress as a member of the UN Global Compact LEAD.

UPS Driver Achieves 50 Years Of Safe Driving

A young Navy vet who joined UPS in 1960 has just become the first driver in the company’s history to pass the 50-year mark for safe driving as a member of UPS’s “Circle of Honor.”

Ron “Big Dog” Sowder (the nickname comes from being the company’s longest-tenured safe driver) began his UPS career 50 years ago as a package car driver, delivering to businesses and private residences. In 1976, he shifted to driving tractor-trailers on the open road and has served as a UPS feeder driver ever since. Currently, Sowder transports packages five days a week, making a 306-mile round trip between the distribution center here and the UPS Worldport® global air hub in Louisville, Ky.

Whether driving package cars or tractor trailers, the one constant with Sowder has been safety. More than 5,200 active UPS drivers currently are members of the “Circle of Honor” – meaning they’ve gone at least 25 years without an accident -- but until yesterday, no driver in the company’s history had ever hit the 50-year mark.

A native of Springboro, Ohio, Sowder figures during the course of his career he’s driven more than 4 million miles; transported more than 35 million packages, and climbed into a UPS truck more than 12,000 times.

“Ron continues to set and reset the gold standard for our drivers,” said Myron Gray, UPS’s president of U.S. operations. “He is an asset to UPS, a great example for all our drivers and a leader within his peer group of Circle of Honor members. It’s operators like Ron who help ensure UPS is able to keep its promises to its customers.”

“A lot’s changed in 50 years,” said Sowder. “When I started driving for UPS, folks in cars did a better job of keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. Now it seems like anything goes – texting, putting on makeup. I’ve even seen folks reading books behind the wheel. The need for defensive driving, getting the big picture, leaving a space cushion, those are more important than ever.”

To help UPS drivers one day match or exceed Sowder’s historic mark, all drivers are taught safe driving methods beginning on the first day of classroom training, including the company’s comprehensive safety course, “Space and Visibility.” The training continues throughout their careers.

More information on UPS’s commitment to safety is available at http://www.pressroom.ups.com/safety.

About UPS

"I love working at Novo Nordisk because there is a sense of empowerment at every level. Everyone gets credit for what they do, not just leadership," said Bobby Hunt, a technician on line 52 at Novo Nordisk's Clayton, N.C. insulin pen manufacturing facility. "The entrepreneurial spirit of the company translates into success for patients. That really makes me proud to work here."

Employees play a significant role in FORTUNE's rankings with two-thirds of a company's score based on the results of a confidential survey sent to a random sample of employees. Employees cited the company's continued growth in an industry experiencing layoffs as a key reason they enjoy working at Novo Nordisk.

Generous paid time off; and

About FORTUNE'S '100 Best Companies to Work For'

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year's survey. More than 246,000 employees at those companies responded to a survey created by the institute, a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries around the world. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. After evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees' faith in management, we may exclude it from the list. Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible.

Novartis Group Company associates across 32 countries will participate in a new Novartis health and well-being initiative during the first Novartis Be Healthy Celebration Week from September 19-23, 2011. During the week, Novartis Group sites are offering many opportunities to help associates take control of their personal health. This includes providing information, activities and tips to promote health and help prevent future health issues.

Novartis is focusing on prevention programs in Be Healthy because statistics from the World Economic Forum (WEF) show that workplace health and well-being programs addressing lifestyle changes can help prevent up to 40% of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and lung disorders.

Novartis introduces Be Healthy, the first Group-wide health and well-being initiative that provides opportunities for associates to take control of their personal health and help prevent future health issues.

Associates across 32 countries will participate in the first Novartis Be Healthy Celebration Week from September 19-23, 2011.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), workplace health and well-being programs addressing lifestyle changes can prevent up to 40% of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers and lung disorders.

The health and welfare of associates is a top priority for Novartis and a natural
extension of the company purpose, to “care and cure."

Initiative builds upon the company’s tradition of providing health and well-being programs to associates.

"Be Healthy supports our strong belief that good healthcare starts with our own employees," said Joseph Jimenez, CEO of Novartis. "This initiative helps Novartis associates to take an active role in managing their own health."

Each day of Be Healthy Celebration Week will focus on one of Be Healthy’s four pillars - Move, Choose, Know and Manage. Each pillar will provide Novartis associates with tips and education to lead healthier lives.

Each participating site will introduce a range of health and well-being activities to encourage Group Company associates to exercise regularly, choose healthy food offerings in canteens and participate in free screenings to learn important personal numbers such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Support programs will be available for those managing an illness or condition while working.

Be Healthy will have broad reach within the Group. In 2011, 76 of the largest Novartis sites across 32 countries are involved which means that the initiative will reach 80% of affiliates' associates. In 2012, the initiative will be expanded to 88 additional sites and reach 95% of associates.

The Novartis Be Healthy Celebration Week coincides with the WHO sponsored "Wellness Week" and the United Nations (UN) High Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.

Novartis is a member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Workplace Wellness Alliance which puts an emphasis on health and well-being (http://www.weforum.org/issues/workplace-wellness-alliance). The WEF alliance is a response to the growing burden of NCDs, the chief cause of death globally and a significant contributor to global healthcare costs.

As part of this initiative, Cognizant will also announce the creation of a permanent Cognizant Maker Space at the New York Hall of Science.

“On the site of the 1964 New York World’s Fair, a time of the nascent Space Age with its vista of promise, I am excited to share Cognizant’s vision for Making the Future, our program for investing in STEM education,” said Cognizant’s D’Souza, who is also on the NYSCI board of trustees. “The space age inspired my generation to study math and science, and fueled a nation’s competitive and innovative spirit. We plan to invest in a new generation of innovation, through an education system that ignites in children the joy of learning and a passion for making, building and creating things.”

Cognizant CEO and President Francisco D’Souza will speak about Cognizant’s commitment to STEM education as part of a distinguished panel on “Making, Education, and Innovation” on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:00pm, where experts will discuss the impact that making can have on education and innovation in the U.S. In addition to D’Souza, the panel will feature:

About Making the Future

The mission of Cognizant’s Making the Future education initiative is to invest in new and existing programs that will spark creativity and unleash the passion of young people in the STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, and math. Cognizant believes that fostering interest in STEM literacy while developing 21st-century skills like creativity, innovation, and collaboration will create a better future for our children, while preparing them to be tomorrow’s leaders in our global economy – essential to fast-growing companies like Cognizant.

Cognizant will outline a three-pronged plan at the Maker Faire:

Cognizant Maker Space at the New York Hall of Science: Cognizant is funding the creation of a permanent 1,200-square-foot area where children of all ages can experience the joy of making things, testing them, and displaying them using a mix of fabrication, digital, and everyday tools and objects. The Cognizant Maker Space will add a new dimension to NYSCI’s ability to create engaging and innovative learning experiences for school groups, visitors, and families. The area will be situated inside the main hall and is expected to be operational by early 2012.

Partnerships: Through financial and technological support and volunteerism, Cognizant is partnering with major educational nonprofits to create and expand programs that emphasize hands-on, project-based learning to help children. One of these is Citizen Schools, a national nonprofit organization that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day for low-income students and connects scientists and engineers with students to teach hands-on “apprenticeship” courses. A second is Engineering is Elementary, a Museum of Science, Boston, program that provides a basic engineering curriculum for use by teachers in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

After-School and Summer Program: Cognizant is partnering with thought leaders at NYSCI, Maker Faire and Make Magazine to develop a community-based after-school and summer program called Making the Future. Children participating in Making the Future programs will make a project of their choosing ranging from electronic gadgets, robots, and software programs to crafts, music, or technology-enhanced clothing. Through grants to various community organizations, Cognizant plans to launch the program at 10 to 20 locations around the U.S. in the summer of 2012, and grow the program nationwide over the next five years. The grants will cover required tools and equipment, project materials, and stipends for teachers and makers who facilitate the programs.

The Making the Future program builds on Cognizant’s current advocacy efforts to advance and invest in new ways the U.S. delivers STEM education. Cognizant is a member of several advocacy organizations, including the Business Roundtable and Change the Equation, a CEO-led initiative to cultivate widespread STEM literacy.

“Making is important because hands-on, project- and design-based learning approaches are more consistent with the cognitive processes and learning styles we attribute to the millennial generation and younger,” said Mark Greenlaw, Vice President for Sustainability and Educational Affairs at Cognizant and Program Director of Making the Future. “Making things is fun, but it’s much more. Making sparks creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and other important skills, and appeals to both girls and boys across a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds.”

This year’s Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens, N.Y., is expected to draw over 30,000 visitors and feature over 500 makers of all ages, with projects ranging from giant fire-breathing dragons to rug-hooking to remote-control airplanes to interactive sculptures, music, arts, crafts, and inventions of all kinds.

Cascade Engineering and Compass Point Labor Management today announced a new partnership focused on decreasing the unemployment rate of West Michigan's military veterans while providing area employers with skilled and dependable job candidates. The companies' "Armed Forces to Work Forces" initiative will commence with an Oct. 3 summit for business leaders interested in joining the new partnership and include a November meeting for regional employers to learn more about how they can place these talented individuals in their organizations.

"The motivation behind 'Armed Forces to Work Forces' stems from the unfortunate fact that the local unemployment rate for veterans is at nearly 25 percent," said Kelley Losey, director of Cascade Engineering’s Quest Sustainable Solutions consulting group. "At Cascade, we are very proud of their service to our country and want to do what we can to help them find employment when they return home to the West Michigan community."

Cascade Engineering is known for its leadership in a variety of workforce development initiatives, including Welfare-to-Career, that help unemployed and underemployed individuals find stable employment. The Company is currently working nationally to assist community collaboration efforts that support poverty reduction and workforce re-entry. Compass Point is a Grand Rapids-based employment service with a strong nationwide record of working with the Armed Forces to build paths to employment for military personnel transitioning to civilian careers. The firm has received several recognitions for its work, including being named as a co-recipient of a $5 million Department of Labor grant and several certificates of achievement from the Armed Forces.

"I became interested in serving this population because some of our best placements are veterans," said Greg Tusch, founder and President of Compass Point. "We have many success stories of how effectively people make the transition from the military into civilian jobs – and how employers are finding skilled, loyal candidates in this unique group of applicants. We look forward to sharing the 'win-win' of employing veterans with businesses across West Michigan."

"I attend numerous meetings where employers are constantly stressing the importance of finding exceptional employees," added Losey. "Not only can we help them fill their open positions, but 'Armed Forces to Work Forces' will show how they can receive special funding for placing these individuals."

About Cascade Engineering

ExxonMobil Must Improve Process Safety at Baytown Refinery

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ - The United Steelworkers Union (USW) says the June 14 injury at ExxonMobil's Baytown, Texas, refinery shows the company must do a better job at handling process safety.

"Glenn Oviedo was seriously injured June 14 while operating a steam vent valve on the refinery's flexicoker, sustaining steam burns over 25 percent of his upper body," said USW International Vice President Gary Beevers, who leads the union's oil sector. "This incident proves ExxonMobil must do a better job on process safety."

"Fortunately Glenn is in stable condition at the Herman hospital in Houston and is expected to recover. Our union is conducting an exhaustive investigation into finding the root causes of this incident so that it doesn't happen again," Beevers added.

USW Health and Safety Coordinator Kim Nibarger is assisting USW Local 13-2001 with the investigation. Emergency Response Team District 13 coordinator Steve Lyle is assisting Glenn's family.

Since the beginning of 2010 ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery has had 33 reported process safety incidents like leaks and flaring.

"These 33 occurrences prove there are far too many process safety incidents at this refinery," Beevers said. "Since the Baytown facility is the nation's largest refinery it should lead the way in process safety."

The USW is the largest industrial union in North America with 850,000 members. It represents workers employed in metals, rubber, chemicals, paper and mining, plus the energy sectors of oil refining, nuclear, gas and electric service utilities, wind, solar and bio-fuels. <a target="_blank"href="http://www.usw.org/">www.usw.org

Millennial Mindset: Deloitte Survey Finds Workers Who Frequently Volunteer Are Happier with Career Progression

A new Deloitte survey reveals that millennials who frequently participate in workplace volunteer activities are far more likely to be proud, loyal and satisfied employees compared to those who rarely or never volunteer.

The eighth annual Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT Survey reveals that, compared to those who rarely or never volunteer, millennials who frequently participate in their company's employee volunteer activities are:

Twice as likely to rate their corporate culture as very positive (56 percent versus 28 percent);

More likely to be very proud to work for their company (55 percent versus 36 percent);

More likely to feel very loyal toward their company (52 percent versus 33 percent);

Nearly twice as likely to be very satisfied with the progression of their career (37 percent versus 21 percent);

More likely to be very satisfied with their employer (51 percent versus 32 percent); and,

More likely to recommend their company to a friend (57 percent versus 46 percent)

"Our own experience has demonstrated the positive outcomes of a strategic corporate volunteer program," said Evan Hochberg, national leader of Deloitte’s community involvement initiative. "It's very exciting to have research that more broadly quantifies the connection between workplace volunteerism and several drivers of positive organizational culture among millennials."

Further, more than one-third (37 percent) of those who frequently volunteer are more likely to be very satisfied with the progression of their career. These and other findings from the Deloitte 2011 Volunteer IMPACT Survey suggest a link between volunteerism and the quality of employee engagement as well as favorable employee perceptions of organizational culture.

At a time when one-third of millennial employees are considering other career options, these findings may offer new insights about a powerful way to engage workers among this age group. "The data shows that, on many levels, employees who regularly volunteer are much more connected than those who do not volunteer," said Joseph Echevarria, chief executive officer, Deloitte LLP. "This is a strong argument for making volunteerism a business priority, because employee engagement and organizational culture are inextricably linked to organizational performance. What's more, engagement and a sense of ownership are essential to leadership, and we recognize the need to cultivate leadership qualities in all our people, and celebrate responsible leadership."

"Leadership responsibilities are essential to what we do here at Deloitte. We are committed to leading the profession, and setting the standard of audit excellence. We are committed to leading in the marketplace, delivering the insights clients need to address their most critical and complex business challenges. We know that people, clients and markets will trust and respect our Deloitte brand to the extent we earn their trust and prove our leadership, in all that we do, including volunteerism."

Widespread Impact on Image and Reputation Underscores Business Value
Deloitte survey findings also suggest that the benefits of creating a culture of service extend well beyond active volunteers. As expected, millennials strongly favor (70 percent) companies committed to the community. However, even among those millennials surveyed who rarely or never volunteer, more than half (61 percent) say they are likely to factor a company’s commitment to the community into their decision if choosing between two jobs with the same location, responsibilities and pay and benefits.

Millennials Seek Social and Career Benefits from Volunteerism
Millennials, who are often characterized by their passion to change the world, are also motivated to volunteer by more than altruism; half (51 percent) of all millennials surveyed want to benefit professionally from their volunteerism. Skilled volunteers, who use their business acumen to help nonprofit organizations, are more likely to seek a professional return on investment for their volunteer efforts than "hands-on" volunteers:

Skilled volunteers are more likely than traditional volunteers to say it is important that their volunteer efforts benefit them professionally (72 percent versus 56 percent).

Skilled volunteers are also more likely than traditional volunteers to be motivated by career advancement (47 percent versus 34 percent).

About Deloitte Community Involvement
Deloitte helps people and communities thrive in three ways:

Leveraging innovative thinking to strengthen nonprofit capacity by helping with strategic, operational and financial challenges, so nonprofits can help more people and communities faster and better.

Complementing innovative thinking with an investment of financial resources at the national and regional level.

Creating and sharing new research, content and insights on ways organizations can leverage skills-based volunteerism.

About this Survey
The Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT Research Series is a key component of Deloitte’s commitment to advancing the dialogue about corporate skills-based volunteerism. The 2011 Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT Survey is the eighth in the series.
2011 Volunteer IMPACT Survey Methodology
Results of the 2011 Volunteer IMPACT Survey are based on online interviews with 1,500 millennials (ages 21-35) who work at organizations with 1,000 or more employees that offer employee volunteer activities or programs. Note: the term "volunteerism" refers to traditional volunteerism, skilled volunteerism, pro bono work and/or nonprofit board service. Interviews were conducted by ORC International between Feb. 22 - 24, 2011. The sample size of 1,500 at a 95 percent confidence level would equate to +/- 2.6 percent margin of error had this been a random sample.

In the Life Media, a group founded on the premise that visibility in media is vital to achieving equality and social justice for LGBT people, worked with Dow on the story, entitled "A Message of Hope."

Dow's portion of the story, told by members of the Company's GLAD (Gays, Lesbians and Allies at Dow) Network, shows how diversity and inclusion is embraced at Dow and how the Company is striving to provide an environment where every employee can reach his or her full potential and achieve personal fulfillment and professional success, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Dow's GLAD network has been a strong force in promoting diversity & inclusion and in advocating for the fundamental rights of LGBT in the workplace both inside and outside of the Company since its formation more than 10 years ago," said Howard Ungerleider, executive vice president for Dow and executive sponsor of GLAD. "This is yet another proof point that these efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to share our story."

Many states in the U.S. have yet to pass laws protecting LGBT people from being fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Dow's global Respect and Responsibility policy, however, provides the Company's employees with this protection and helps create an environment in which all employees can focus on their jobs rather than fear of being discriminated for who they are.

Over the past several years, Dow through its GLAD network has earned recognition from several premiere national and international LGBT organizations, including the Human Rights Council; International Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce; Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays; and Lambda Legal.

Most recently, Dow received two highly coveted "Outie" awards from Out & Equal: the 2010 Significant Achievement Award, which recognizes an employer that has made significant strides in advancing a fair and equitable workplace for its LGBT employees; and the 2010 Trailblazer Award -- which recognizes an LGBT person who has made significant contributions to advancing workplace equality by helping improve their own workplace or contributing to equality nationally. The recipient of this award, Bill Hendrix, Dow AgroSciences biology team leader for insect traits and seed treatments and co-chair for Dow's GLAD network, is profiled in the PBS segment.

GLAD recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary with Dow and is one of seven diversity networks which comprise 150 local chapters around the world for the Company.

Lipscomb University's Nationally Recognized Institute for Conflict Management Launches Online Master's Program

Lipscomb University's Institute for Conflict Management (ICM), nationally known for its work advancing conflict management skills within business, faith-based organizations, schools and nonprofits, is now offering its unique master's degree in an online format beginning in September, announced Steve Joiner, managing director of the institute.

The institute was created by Lipscomb president L. Randolph Lowry, who came to the university in 2005 after founding the renowned Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University school of Law. In the four years since Lowry founded the Lipscomb institute with a more interdisciplinary approach, the ICM has earned a reputation as one of the nation's finest conflict management schools, offering both master's degrees and certifications.

Lipscomb's master's of conflict management is noted for its practical, hands-on approach to teaching the theories of conflict management, applicable to a variety of industries from human resources to health care to nonprofit management. With the majority of the institute's students being mid-career professionals, the addition of an online program will be an attractive alternative for potential students across the region and the nation, Joiner said.

Master's candidates in the online program will take 24 of the required 30 hours online, with the remaining six hours conducted on the Lipscomb campus. Details of the program, including video demonstrations of the online curriculum, can be found at <a target="_blank"href="http://studyconflict.lipscomb.edu/home">studyconflict.lipscomb.edu.

"By adding the online option, we have removed an obstacle for professionals who want to further their careers with a degree in conflict management, but simply don't have the ability to take all of their classes on campus due to the demands of work or family," Joiner said. "Students who earn their degrees online will not be missing out on a thing; they will receive instruction from the same nationally recognized faculty members who teach on campus, and they will come away with the same thorough understanding of theory and practical technique that will pay dividends in their professional and personal lives."

Conflict resolution is an increasingly attractive field of study, Joiner said, with applications in virtually any professional setting. Graduates of the Lipscomb program have returned to careers in fields as diverse as higher education, religion and politics, health care, and business or human resources, taking with them a deeper understanding of the principles and practical tactics surrounding dispute resolution.

The ICM practices the practical dispute resolution techniques it teaches every day through providing consultations and mediation services as well as providing voluntary services such as the anti-bullying curriculum developed for a Nashville middle school, negotiating water rights for natives living in the mountains of Guatemala and coordinating significant conversations among diverse groups with common interests, such as religious groups and health care providers. The institute has also been contracted to provide mediation training for Tennessee state judges, Nashville law enforcement agents and state employees.

The faculty at the Institute for Conflict Management represent some of the leading minds in the field, coming to Nashville from all corners of the country to teach their classes. In addition to the nationally distinguished faculty, Lipscomb University has built its reputation in the conflict management field in two other key ways:

ICM classes present a blend of theory and practical applications, whereas most other conflict management schools focus on one or the other.

Unlike other conflict management programs that are included within a law degree, the tenets of conflict resolution at Lipscomb are part of the very fabric of the university; drawing students in fields ranging from theology to business to human resources who all take classes at the institute.

"At Straus we learned that the skills of negotiation, mediation and arbitration have very broad applicability, and I wanted to bring the very best of what we learned and present it in a different way, because our environment is different," Lowry of the new online program. "We began with strategically drawing in faculty from all over the country. The teaching in this program will highlight experiential learning because the skills of negotiation and mediation can’t be learned without interactive moments drawing on your experience and experience of faculty."

For more information on applying for admission to the institute, potential students should visit the ICM website <a target="_blank"href="http://studyconflict.lipscomb.edu/home">studyconflict.lipscomb.edu or call Beth Morrow, assistant director of the institute, at (615) 966-2502. More information on the institute is available at <a target="_blank"href="http://www.icm.lipscomb.edu">icm.lipscomb.edu, and those interested can follow the ICM on Twitter at <a target="_blank"href="http://twitter.com/LUConflictPros">@LUConflictPros and on Facebook at <a target="_blank"href="http://www.facebook.com/lipscombicm">facebook.com/lipscombicm. Applications are being accepted now, with classes beginning Sept. 8.

Recycling at Work Can Make "Eco"nomic Sense

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ - The Virginia Recycling Association (VRA) will hold a free workshop to teach all types of businesses including retail, manufacturing, front offices, warehouses and restaurants how they can minimize their carbon footprint by implementing recycling programs. The workshop that is made possible through a grant from International Paper will be held on May 9 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

As more businesses are seeing the advantages of "going green" the VRA would like to be a resource for businesses that want to find out more about how and what they can recycle. "A large part of the workshop will be to offer free exhibit space to recycling businesses so that attendees of the workshops would be able to interact one-on-one with recyclers about their recycling needs and possibilities," said Erica Trout, VRA's Association Manager.

Speakers include experts from various perspectives including: property management, janitorial, waste pick-up, recycling pick-up and even an organics recycler.

An under-served market in the recycling industry in Virginia includes small to medium-sized businesses. This workshop will give businesses interested in recycling an opportunity to let recyclers know their unique hurdles to starting recycling programs and where recyclers let businesses know what programs already exist.

The main goals of this grant project are to encourage more businesses to start recycling and to encourage recycling businesses to adapt or create special programs to serve the business community. "We hope this program will have a positive impact on the community by reducing waste and costs to businesses," says Trout.

For more information about the Business Recycling Initiative, contact Erica Trout at ericatrout@msn.com or 804.302.4231. Attendees can register on the website at <a target="_blank"href="http://www.vrarecycles.org">vrarecycles.org.

About The Virginia Recycling Association (VRA)
The VRA was formed in 1990 by a group of individuals who are committed to expanding state recycling opportunities. Since its inception, the VRA has become the leading resource of recycling information for our members, the general public, the Virginia General Assembly, local government, business, and industry.

Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area Exceeds its $67 Million Goal to Help People and Communities in Need

The 2010 Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (<a target="_blank"href="http://www.cfcnca.org/">CFCNCA), managed by Global Impact, announced today that generous Federal employees pledged $67 million. This is $500,000 more than the amount raised in 2009 and includes $17.8 million raised in pledges through e-Giving, which is $5.7 million more than in 2009.

"My fellow Federal employees have a tremendous spirit of public service. They give to charities because of a personal experience, regardless of their own financial situation," said Linda Washington, Senior Policy Advisor for Community Initiatives at the U.S. Department of Transportation and Chairperson of the Local Federal Coordinating Committee. "They feel connected to a cause, or are often close to the need. For every dollar raised through the campaign, a real life has been touched."

The campaign highlighted dozens of Federal employees whose lives were changed due to a CFCNCA-supported charity. The stories outlined personal connections to the campaign, including:

A Federal employee facing cancer and receiving counseling and treatment through CFCNCA-funded charities;

A sergeant wounded in Iraq, returning to work for the charity that helped him cope and heal when he came home; and

A woman who lost her children and home due to addiction, finding her way back to health and a stable job in the Federal workforce because a charity offered her a chance at recovery.

"I am deeply grateful for the commitment and generosity of the Federal workforce toward those in need," stated Renée S. Acosta, President & CEO, Global Impact. "They cared, they gave, and they changed millions of lives locally, nationally and around the world."

Since assuming management of the CFCNCA in 2003, Global Impact increased contributions each year. With the 2010 campaign, Global Impact is now directing nearly $20 million more to charities providing life-enriching and life-saving programs to people and communities in need. The CFCNCA was the top-grossing campaign of approximately 211 individual CFCs held nationwide during 2010.
