M&S publishes its first update on Plan A 2020 and how it creates sustainable value

The 2015 M&S Plan A Report is the company’s first update on its Plan A 2020 targets launched last year. The report is independently assured to AA1000AS and ISAE3000 and uses GRI G4 as an index. The Report also features an extended commentary from Jonathon Porritt on behalf of the M&S Sustainable Retail Advisory Board.

Forty seven targets have been met, 9 haven’t, 39 are on-track, 2 are behind-plan and a small number of brand new targets have yet to be started.

2014/15 highlights include:

  • Building in M&S social or environmental best practice standards into 64% of M&S.
  • Plan A contributing a further £160m in net business benefits.
  • Opening the UK’s large single rood mounted solar panel array at our Castle Donington warehouse and completing our biggest Plan A retro-fit at our Newcastle city centre store.
  • Improving energy efficiency in its UK and Republic Of Ireland operations by 36% since 2006/07.
  • Offering over 2,000 Make Your Marks/ Movement to Work placements for young unemployed people with 62% going on to find work.
  • Exceeding Boardroom gender diversity targets with 38% women Board members and over 70% of senior appointments being made to internal candidates.
  • Donating and helping to raise over £20m for international, national and local charities.
  • M&S employees completing over 5,000 days of paid volunteering.
  • Launching the M&S Global Community Programme with 23 major projects to help people across 14 countries.
  • Providing training for 652,000 workers in M&S General Merchandise supply chains since 2010.
  • 32% of M&S food coming from factories meeting or exceeding the M&S Silver Sustainable Factory Standard.
  • Over 100 of the largest factories that supply M&S clothing adopting energy saving best practices.

In addition, the 2015 M&S Annual Report is its second Integrated Annual Report and illustrates how all six capitals are managed within the M&S business model to create sustainable value for shareholders and other stakeholders.
