OppenheimerFunds employees supported the local community this week during its Distribution team conference in San Diego. Event attendees assembled 400 baby care packages for local military families and participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activity by helping build 20 model solar cars with children from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, and donating 100 solar car kits to the program. The firm also provided a $10,000 grant to both organizations.

Over the past six years, OppenheimerFunds employees have supported local nonprofits in cities across the United States during the symposium, a semi-annual conference for more than 250 members of the firm’s Distribution team.

“Getting involved with nonprofit organizations in the communities where our clients live and work is important to our firm and a key part of our Distribution Symposium,” said John McDonough, Head of Distribution and Marketing at OppenheimerFunds. Our employees look forward to it, and are proud to partner with groups including Operation Homefront and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego to help advance the positive impact they are making across the community.”

Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect. Distribution Symposium volunteers worked with Operation Homefront and their Star Spangled Babies program to create baby care packages that will be provided to local new and expecting military families.

“We are grateful to partner with OppenheimerFunds to help give back to military families in the San Diego area,” said Jack Chirrick, Senior Director at Operation Homefront. “The baby care packages assembled during the firm’s Distribution Symposium are much appreciated by service members and their families.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego’s STEM program engages youth ages 5-18 in a variety of hands-on activities centered on STEM, serving as a support for school-based STEM programs while helping ignite interest and increased aptitude in these subjects. Volunteers built model solar cars with Boys & Girls Club members, helping them better understand the fundamentals of STEM and inspire them to become more involved in STEM activities.

“OppenheimerFunds shares our passion for math literacy and is making valuable contributions to helping introduce kids to a skillset that is crucial in tomorrow’s economy,” said Tesha Young, Director of Corporate Partnerships for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.

The firm’s corporate philanthropy initiatives include its 10,000 Kids by 2020 program, which aims to introduce 10,000 students to math literacy programs over the next several years through nonprofit partnerships and active employee volunteerism. The firm works closely with organizations including the National Museum of Mathematics, the Boys & Girls Club, MATHSWORLDUK and Cross-Cultural Solutions, which provides impactful and sustainable service opportunities and skills based volunteer programs.
