Fisherblue Press today announced the publication of “Sustainable You,” the second book by Michael Prager.

Sustainable You” is a workbook that lays out a case, and a practical course, for achieving what Prager has coined “personal sustainability.” “What’s the point of working to sustain the planet, if we’re not also trying to sustain ourselves?” Prager asked.

“Prager makes a compelling case that the choices we make influence both our personal sustainability as well as the world's. He offers inspiration and practical guidance to illustrate that saving the planet and saving ourselves are two sides of the same coin,” said Joel Makower, chairman and executive editor of GreenBiz Group.

Prager traces the roots of “Sustainable You” to his inspirational story of having weighed as much as 365 pounds, but now having sustained a 155-pound loss for almost a quarter century. But as he did with his first book, “Fat Boy Thin Man,” “Sustainable You” eschews dieting or nutritional advice in favor of more substantive fare.

Prager was a daily newspaper journalist for 30 years, most recently for 14 years at the Boston Globe. After he left in 2007, he began freelance reporting on what he conceived to be the sustainability movement, but was really the green-building industry.

As he came to realize that mistake, he noticed the parallel to when he thought dieting would solve his weight problem. In both cases — eating differently and building differently — change was warranted, but neither defined the real problem.

“Both attempt to fix symptoms of the problem, rather than the root, which is a failure to base personal decisions on a healthy self interest,” Prager said. “‘Which of these choices will be better for me in the long term?’ instead of ‘How can I keep doing what I’m doing, but try to clean up better afterwards?’”

Fisherblue Press, of Arlington, Mass., timed the release of “Sustainable You” to coincide with Prager’s series of presentations at Canyon Ranch, the Tucson-based flagship of Canyon Ranch spas, a recognized leader in healthy living and luxury spa vacations.

The book’s foreword is Thomas A. Sondergeld, vice president, global benefits & mobility at Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc.
