Green Mountain Energy Sun Club® Celebrates $50,000 Donation to Local New York Theater

The historic Tarrytown Music Hall has provided local residents with a place to enjoy quality programs and learn about theater for the past 125 years. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club® program, the Music Hall is now also an example of how a 19th century building can become a showcase for solar energy. The theater, accompanied by the Sun Club, commemorated the donation with a “flip the switch” event on Sunday, Dec. 6, prior to the start of the theater’s production of “The Nutcracker.”

The solar array will offset 27 percent of the theater’s annual energy consumption. The savings will enable the Music Hall to continue growing as a leading presenter in the performing arts space and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.

The Tarrytown Music Hall, built in 1885, is not only the oldest theater in Westchester County, but also one of the oldest and most historic in the entire United States. Today, it is fully restored and is one of the busiest theaters in the region, offering the best in music, theater, dance and film.

“We’re extremely thankful for the solar donation from the Sun Club,” said Björn Olsson, executive director, Tarrytown Music Hall. “This new solar array will help us better serve the Westchester community and protect the environment.”

“The Sun Club loves working with unique non-profit organizations that are deeply rooted in their community,” said Doug Semmes, director of retail residential sales, Green Mountain Energy Company. “The Tarrytown Music Hall has had a tremendous impact on the Westchester community for the past 125 years, providing entertainment and education to visitors of all ages. The addition of the solar array will help them operate more efficiently.”

Since 2002, the Sun Club has donated more than $4 million to non-profits all over the country, and the installation at the Tarrytown Music Hall is the Sun Club’s 86th solar donation. Contributions to the Sun Club come from Green Mountain Energy Company’s residential customers, the company and its employees, and other Sun Club supporters who believe in providing a more sustainable future to our local communities.

Tarrytown Music Hall

The 843-seat Music Hall is owned and operated by The Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory, Inc, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational, and cultural organization established in 1979 and managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. It has a two-fold mission: 1) to provide quality programs in the performing arts for the general public including performing opportunities for students and professional artists, and 2) to preserve and restore the Music Hall, the oldest theater in Westchester and a building listed on the National Register for Historic Places. The Sun Club donates solar power and sustainability projects to other non-profits using contributions from Green Mountain Energy Company, its residential customers and employees, and donors from around the country. Since the program’s founding in 2002, the Sun Club has donated more than $3.8 million to help install over 900 kilowatts of solar power, which has the potential to avoid more than 1.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year. That’s like planting 175 trees every year.
