On Oct. 2, The Resource Foundation (TRF) will host its Semilla, Harvest for Hope fall cocktail event to celebrate Latin America’s rich culture and raise awareness about the continuing need to support sustainable development in the region.

“Our vision is a more inclusive, equitable society in Latin America,” said TRF Executive Director Marcela Lopez-Macedonio. “This is a vibrant, diverse region; it is innovative and growing. But it also faces certain inherent challenges stemming from generations of social and economic disparities. We’re working to give people in all sectors of society access to the opportunities they need to effect lasting change.”

The Semilla, Harvest for Hope event will be held at the Douglaston Club in Douglaston, New York, from 6-9 p.m. and will include a silent auction, Latin music and a light fare prepared by Colombian chef Francisco Yepes. All proceeds will benefit TRF’s work to help under-served families in Latin America create the lives they imagine.

TRF is a nonprofit organization based in New York City that works closely with U.S. donors to support locally driven development programs throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Its mission is to empower low-income communities with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to improve their lives. Since its establishment in 1987, TRF has provided more than $70 million in grants to support the work and build the capacity of effective local nonprofits in 29 countries.

“The Resource Foundation has been supporting local programs in Latin America for 27 years,” said Lopez-Macedonio. “It is an ongoing effort to raise awareness about the persistent challenges facing the region. Despite relative stability, over 160 million people still live in poverty. It is still the most unequal region in the world, and it struggles with issues such as women’s empowerment, disabilities, education, the environment and HIV/AIDS.”

TRF has a broad network of local nonprofit partners throughout Latin America that implement innovative self-help programs focused on affordable housing, education and job skills, disaster relief, healthcare and HIV/AIDS, financial inclusion, sustainable agriculture and water and sanitation, among many other issues. Over the years, these initiatives have helped thousands of under-resourced families increase their self-reliance and improve their quality of life.

The Semilla, Harvest for Hope event is the first of a series of gatherings for TRF’s supporters. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased at www.resourcefnd.org/event2014 or by calling (212) 675-6170.
