The Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN International) has announced a series of events to mobilize women around the issue of climate change during the People’s Climate March, Climate Week NYC 2014, and the UN Climate Leadership Summit, to take place in New York City the week of Sept. 21, 2014.

WECAN International is a global women’s environment and climate action movement that engages and provides a forum for collaboration among female grassroots activists, indigenous and business leaders, scientists, policy makers, academics and culture-shapers.

The organization will commence its series of initiatives related to Climate Week NYC 2014 and the UN Climate Summit with the release of the WECAN Women’s Climate Action Agenda on Sept. 9.

“Drafted by more than 100 women leaders from across the globe during our summit last September, the WECAN Women’s Climate Action Agenda analyzes the root causes of the environmental destruction and social injustice which today threaten people and planet in an unprecedented way,” said Osprey Orielle Lake, co-founder and executive director of WECAN International. “The Agenda presents powerful recommendations and alternative solutions to the climate crisis, leaving no room for inaction as world leaders enter into climate negotiations this year.”

In continuing their sequence of actions, a contingent of WECAN women and allies will participate in the People’s Climate March in New York City on Sept. 21, joining a worldwide call to action for what is expected to be the largest climate demonstration in history. The organization will also mobilize a ‘Wall of Women’ action, occurring both in New York and internationally on Sept. 21 and 22.

“Across the globe, women are facing the effects of a changing climate on a daily basis, and are risking their lives in defense of their communities and the Earth. On Sept. 21 and 22, we ask those who will be with us in New York, as well as our allies throughout the world, to stand in solidarity and physically link together in demonstration to create what we are calling a ‘Wall of Women’ to protect and defend the web of life and let world leaders know we want action on climate change now,” Lake explained.

On Sept. 22, WECAN International will host an event on ‘Women Leading Solutions on the Frontlines of Climate Change’. Partnering with the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature, the organization will also hold a panel on ‘The Rights of Nature’ on Sept. 23. Both events will be held at the UN Church Center, 777 1st Avenue, E 44th St, New York, NY 10017.

“The challenges we face today have never been greater,” said Lake. “Nonetheless, there has never been so much hope; resistance movements and political will are growing, and climate solutions are abound. This series of actions in New York City, and in solidarity across the globe, demonstrates that our potential to create a healthy and equitable future for the Earth and its people is real, and is growing ceaselessly. It is imperative that we take this opportunity to act.”

All events are free and open to the public. Details and registration portal are available at wecaninternational.org/pages/climate-march-2014
