Johnson & Johnson today announced that Earthwards®, the company’s approach to sustainable product development, was named a 2013 Top Project of the Year by Environmental Leader, which recognizes excellence in projects that improve environmental or energy management and increase the bottom line.

Launched in 2009, the Earthwards® approach defines how Johnson & Johnson addresses the environmental and social impacts of its products, and engages development teams in designing innovative and more sustainable solutions across a product’s lifecycle – from formulation and manufacturing, to product use and end-of-life. Earthwards® recognition, the company’s highest level of achievement, is reserved only for products that have made at least three significant sustainability improvements while also passing a review of internal and external sustainability experts.

“At Johnson & Johnson, we believe improving the sustainability of our products is crucial to accelerating a healthy future for all,” said Al Iannuzzi, Senior Director of Worldwide Environment Health and Safety at Johnson & Johnson, who oversees Earthwards®. “We are excited Environmental Leader is showcasing best practices in sustainable product development and are eager to drive continuous improvement and innovation for sustainability in the healthcare sector.”

As part of the company’s Healthy Future 2015 commitments, Johnson & Johnson set a goal to have 60 products Earthwards® recognized by 2015. Through 2013, the company is nearly there, with 55 products in its Earthwards® portfolio.

“Our judges were impressed by Johnson & Johnson’s ability to integrate the Earthwards® approach into its product development process and define a clear roadmap for advancing the program’s goals,” says Paul Nastu, publisher of Environmental Leader. “Creating viable, sustainable products is no easy task – especially at a company the size and scale of Johnson & Johnson – and we are thrilled to recognize Earthwards® as a Top Project of the Year.”
