BICEP (Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy) announced today that Aveda, the Minnesota-based manufacturer and distributor of botanically-based personal care products, has joined the BICEP coalition to advocate for innovative climate and clean energy policies. Aveda becomes the 30th company to join the BICEP coalition since its founding in 2008.

Dave Rapaport, Vice President of Earth & Community Care at Aveda said:
“Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world and set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility. We have a long track record of taking action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and we are proud to join other BICEP members in advocating for urgently needed climate and energy policies.”

Aveda was the first privately-owned company to sign Ceres Principles for corporate environmental conduct in 1989, and continues today to be a leader of beauty industry innovation of sustainable packaging. It was the first beauty company to use 100 percent post consumer recycled PET plastics and today 85 percent of its skin care and hair care styling PET bottles and jars contain 100 percent post consumer recycled materials.

Aveda also purchases wind energy to offset 100 percent of the energy used by its primary manufacturing facility in Minnesota, its company headquarters, and its Aveda-owned Experience Centers, Salons and Institutes in New York City. It also purchases carbon dioxide offsets for its aerosol products.

By joining BICEP, Aveda has committed to expanding its global sustainability efforts by working with businesses and policymakers to enact meaningful energy and climate policies. BICEP, a project of Ceres, was launched in 2008 with a core group of five companies, including Starbucks, Nike and Levi Strauss. & Co. It has since expanded to include leading companies representing the technology, sports and real estate sectors such as eBay, Inc., Burton Snowboards, Symantec and Jones Lang LaSalle. BICEP members have been vocal proponents of renewable energy, greener transportation and stricter pollution controls on power plants.

“For years Aveda’s innovative products and packaging have led sustainability efforts within the beauty industry,” said Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres. “Today, we are pleased that Aveda is stepping up its commitment to environmental sustainability by joining the BICEP coalition to advocate for clean energy policies.”

Aveda also became a signatory in 2013 to Ceres’ Climate Declaration, which calls upon U.S. policymakers to capture the American economic opportunity of addressing climate change.

About Aveda
Founded in 1978 in Minneapolis, MN, Aveda creates high performance, botanically-based products for beauty professionals and consumers. The company continues to innovate in botanical technologies, drawing inspiration from the principles of green science with ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to develop performance-driven, plant-based hair, skin, body and make-up products, and a comprehensive menu of ritual-based treatments for head-to-toe beauty.

Throughout the years, Aveda has pioneered new benchmarks of environmental responsibility in beauty. It was the first privately-owned company to sign the Ceres Principles in 1989 (Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies) and the first beauty company in the world to manufacture with 100 percent wind power. Aveda was also the first beauty company to receive a Cradle To Cradle charter for its commitment to sustainable products, packaging and production.  Currently seven products hold Cradle To Cradle certification.  Since 1999, Aveda’s annual Earth Month campaign, held each April, has raised more than $32 million to support environmental projects around the world.
