As part of its complete redesign of the popular All for Good volunteer marketplace, Points of Light today unveiled a critical advance in the staffing of volunteer-based recovery efforts after disasters.

The new disaster portal, found at AllforGood.org and made possible by The UPS Foundation and Gap Inc., allows people to sign up anytime to offer their skills and expertise in times of disaster. When a disaster strikes, Points of Light and its partners will be able to search the registry and reach out to those with the needed skills.

All for Good – a service of Points of Light – is one of the world’s largest free, online marketplaces matching volunteers with opportunities to serve. Users of All for Good generated nearly 50 million project searches in the past year, an eightfold increase since 2011 when Points of Light took over the service.

Tens of thousands of organizations – including United Way, AARP, Idealist.org, the White House (Serve.gov), the Corporation for National and Community Service and many of the nation’s leading volunteer action centers – use All for Good to recruit volunteers.

At any given time, there are enough regularly updated opportunities available in All for Good for more than 1 million volunteers in nearly every zip code in the continental United States to find a way to make a difference.

In addition to the disaster portal, the revamped AllforGood.org now:

  • Allows nonprofits of any size – and even individuals – to register on the site for free, post volunteer opportunities, then invite others to sign up to help.
  • Allows nonprofits and individuals to offer volunteers the convenience of searching and signing up for volunteer opportunities at specific times and places without having to leave the site.
  • Allows volunteers to search for projects using an interface that’s more user friendly and designed for computer, tablet or mobile devices.

“We are committed to continually strengthening All for Good as a public service designed to make it as easy as possible for people to see where help is needed and to sign up to meet the need,” said Scott Geller, chief technology officer at Points of Light. “The new site allows our partners to recruit volunteers in a way that’s as fun and easy as picking a movie or making an online dinner reservation.”

Points of Light will introduce a new premium version of All for Good to organizations in February, offering additional volunteer recruiting, engagement and service recognition features for a low monthly cost.

Future plans for All for Good include adding features that 1) allow volunteers to register their skills so nonprofits seeking pro bono volunteers can find them at any time, and 2) allow those searching for volunteer opportunities to donate money to causes they care about.

All for Good was inspired by President Obama, who called on more Americans to serve, and Internet pioneer Craig Newmark, who saw the need for an online resource to help Americans easily find ways to serve – “a Craigslist for volunteering.” It was built as a Google “20% project” and launched in 2009 by an all-volunteer team, including executives from Craigslist Foundation, EchoDitto, FanFeedr, UCLA and YouTube. All for Good was acquired by Points of Light in 2011.

“We are proud to build on the foundation created by such an incredible group of volunteers,” said Tracy Hoover, president of Points of Light, “and we’re so grateful to The UPS Foundation and Gap Inc. for making these improvements possible.”
