As of December 2013, there are more than 900 Certified B Corporations from over 60 industries and 28 countries, representing a diverse multi-billion dollar marketplace.
Why We Became a B Corp
Like our motto, we look out for not only our clients but also our employees and community. We became a B Corp to help set the standard in what it means to do business – helping out your neighbor and keeping them in mind when you make your decisions. It is also a great honor to be part of the B Corp family with like-minded businesses.
The Change We Seek
Insurance has a real problem with its image in the community. CAL Insurance strives to be recognized as a good corporate citizen. That is why CAL created Small Business California (smallbusinesscalifornia.org) which provides information to California small businesses and advocates for small businesses in Sacramento. In fact, Small Business California was one of the major supporters of the legislation that created B Corps.
CAL Insurance is also an active participant with Volunteers in Medicine. This organization currently has 96 clinics in 29 states. It is a network of free clinics that serves the working uninsured .The program takes no government money and solely operates on the generosity of Foundations, Corporations, Small Business individuals and its Volunteers. One of the VIM clinics is Clinic by the Bay in San Francisco, which CAL co-founded.
Looking out for the community also includes the environment and employees. CAL strives to be a model employer by providing competitive salaries and generous bonuses based on profits of agency, time off, benefits and continued education. Through action they also instill sustainability into their employees by changing the way they dispose of waste, use energy-efficient practices, and buying supplies locally. Being a B Corporation will add to CAL’s ability to further make positive changes for our employees, customers and the entire community!
