NEW YORK, Dec. 05 /CSRwire/ - Morgan Stanley has been recognized today as the top community-minded company for its size and as the top company in its industry in The Civic 50, an annual initiative that identifies and recognizes companies for their commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business. The survey was conducted by the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) and Points of Light, leading experts on civic engagement, and published by Bloomberg News.

Morgan Stanley received the No. 1 ranking for all large-cap companies and the No. 1 ranking across all financial services companies. The Firm also achieved a No. 1 ranking across all companies for its organizational commitment, a measurement based on the scope of community engagement programming and how fully the Firm engages all of its resources to strengthen communities. Additionally, the listing placed Morgan Stanley second among all companies for its ability to measure impact and third for fostering civic culture.

“Employee engagement is a cornerstone for the charitable efforts at Morgan Stanley. By combining our financial support with the expertise and talent of our employees, we believe we can create lasting positive impact for our communities,” said Joan Steinberg, Managing Director and Global Head of Philanthropy at Morgan Stanley. “The commitment to giving back runs strong across our firm, and we are proud to have received such positive recognition from the National Conference on Citizenship, Points of Light and Bloomberg News.”

Morgan Stanley provided service and support to more than 12,500 community organizations last year, including more than $80 million in employee and Morgan Stanley donations. The Firm’s civic engagement programs significantly leverage employees’ talent and expertise, and last year delivered more than 430,000 hours of volunteer service. These efforts include the annual Morgan Stanley Strategy Challenge, a pro bono consulting initiative that pairs top talent at the Firm with nonprofits to solve strategic issues.

This November, Morgan Stanley celebrated the 10th anniversary of the NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, the flagship of the Firm’s Global Alliance for Children’s Health. Morgan Stanley continues its 40-year relationship with NewYork-Presbyterian, and the Firm’s employees have raised significant funding for several building campaigns while also volunteering and serving on committees at the hospital.

The Civic 50 applicants were evaluated and accrued points based on several criteria, including the amount of financial and human resources applied to civic improvement, whether internal and external resources are used to maximize community impact, how a company’s community engagement activities align its business interests, how broadly community engagement is supported and institutionalized within a company’s policies, systems and incentives, and how a company measures the social and business value of its community engagement programs.
