Teak Media Joins B Corp Movement

Teak Media + Communication (www.teakmedia.com), a media and communications firm that promotes nonprofits and responsible companies, is now a Certified B Corporation.

The only marketing or communications firm in Massachusetts certified as a B Corp, Teak is now one of 830 B Corps in 27 countries, including Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, and Seventh Generation, that is committed to bringing about social change through corporate change.

The prestigious designation is awarded to companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems and meet higher standards of performance, transparency and accountability. B Corps are important because they inspire all businesses to compete not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.

To become a Certified B Corporation, Teak went through a rigorous evaluation to determine if the company met the comprehensive performance standards necessary to qualify. How Teak treats its employees, the type of clients it serves, its impact on the environment, and its relationships with vendors were among the inner workings of the company that were assessed. Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the result of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.

“For 16 years, Teak has generated news and public awareness for responsible companies and nonprofits that are making the world a better place. Going through the process of becoming certified as a B Corp was a natural extension of our corporate mission,” says Teak Founder and President Jackie Herskovitz Russell. “’We are most excited about the fact that the B Corp movement exists. Real change in the world will evolve as corporations become accountable to more than just their own profit margins.”

To Teak’s clients, which include the New England Aquarium, the Pan-Mass Challenge, the YMCAs of Greater Boston, The Conversation Project and others, having Teak become a B Corp is a solid endorsement that they are being represented by the right firm, one that is aligned with their mission to serve.

Created by B Lab, a nonprofit organization with a global mission to redefine success in business, the B Corp movement makes it easier for all to determine the difference between “good” companies and those with just good marketing. B Lab also works to pass national benefit corporation legislation to accelerate growth of social entrepreneurship and impact investing, drive capital to high impact investments through the use of the GIRS Rating and Analytics, and provide the tools for businesses to measure, compare and improve their social and environmental performance.
