WASHINGTON, Sep. 19 /CSRwire/ - The Ninth Annual Green Festival returns to the nation’s capital September 21-22, 2013 at the Washington Convention Center, featuring an ever-widening variety of food programming, demonstrations and displays, establishing a presence as one of the top annual events for “Green Foodies” in the DC area.
“Food has become the most popular program element of the show,” says Green Festival Regional Director Danielle Tergis. “As consumer interest in healthy eating and know where their food comes from has increased dramatically, we’ve gone out of our way to expand programming to meet the demand.”
Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food and Water Watch and author of the best-selling book Foodopoly, will speak about food policy September 21 at 2 PM. Washington Post Food & Travel Editor Joe Yonan will do a workshop based on his newly released book Eat Your Vegetables September 22 at 1 PM. DC vegan baker and two-time winner of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” Doron Petersan will also share recipes to make her Sweet and Sticky vegan creations at 3 PM. Local celebrity chefs Todd Wiss of Firefly will contribute cutting edge ideas on healthy cooking and using things from your urban garden September 21 at 1 PM, as will Aaron McLoud of Cedar Restaurant September 22 at noon.
While much of the program celebrates delicious food and healthy cooking for its own sake, a good portion of the program features an educational component: DC-based FRESHFARM Markets (FRESHFARM Markets FoodPrints Program) will present special sessions on “Eating Healthy On A Budget” (Good Food stage on September 22 at 2:00 PM) and “Kids Love Kael” (Good Food Stage, September 21 at 2:00 PM). The Festival will also offer practical workshops on backyard chicken keeping (now a very hot trend in DC), composting at home, growing herbs and a range of other topics.
“We’ve seen a surge in interest in organic food and cooking all over the country,” says Hamler. “The public is increasingly interested not only in supporting local sustainable farmers and food sources, but in employing gourmet methods to enjoy this food, and we’ve doubled programming in this area in the last few years.”
The event also features an Organic Food Court (Organic Food Court) and a Sustainable Beer & Wine Garden. There are also dozens of booths, demos and displays on the show floor itself that can be explored through the event’s website (local and national green businesses). Green Festival is the largest marketplace of eco-friendly, organic and Fair Trade businesses with products and services for home, school and work. The event is a project of two nationally recognized not-for-profits, Green America (www.greenamerica.org) and Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org).
