Global Impact Closes Japan Relief Fund, Donations Funded Life-saving Missions in Crisis Aftermath

Global Impact today announced the conclusion of a humanitarian relief effort it launched in response to the devastation wrought by an earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan nearly four months ago.

Global Impact and its alliance of leading charities moved quickly to establish the Japan Relief Fund to help victims and support the rescue, relief and rebuilding efforts. Global Impact's partners were among a select group of first responders: disaster relief charities permitted on the ground in Japan after the disaster struck.

The Japanese government, for example, allowed the Salvation Army World Service Office to enter disaster areas on the island and use access roads that were closed to the public. One Salvation Army team went to Sendai, where they delivered and served 1,000 meals to evacuees. Another team supported a relief office in the Mito area and unloaded bottles of water, biscuits, blankets, diapers and tissue boxes for distribution to evacuees. The third team headed to an area where people had been evacuated from the vicinity around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, but snow and fuel shortages meant they had to divert to other areas to support evacuees.

AmeriCares had a team of relief workers on the ground in Japan within days after the disaster, assessing the immediate health needs of survivors and delivering aid to evacuees living in shelters in the hard-hit Miyagi prefecture. The organization also airlifted medical supplies valued at more than $525,000 to help survivors.

The Japan Relief Fund helped to ease the suffering of tsunami survivors. Global Impact will continue to work diligently to assist its partners' humanitarian mission in Japan through the newly launched Disaster Relief Fund, an impact fund designed to address the ongoing needs of individuals and communities affected by disasters around the world.
