Today, in support of Alcohol Awareness Month and the upcoming prom and graduation season, the Health Alliance on Alcohol (HAA) released a redesigned website and new, engaging, fact-based materials to encourage parents to talk with their teens about alcohol and create an ongoing dialogue throughout the year. The HAA will also extend its reach among parents, mentors and educators through its new social media presence on Twitter (@DiscussAlcohol) and Facebook.

Together with the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System (NYPH) and White Plains Hospital (WPH), HEINEKEN USA helped found the Health Alliance on Alcohol in 2005 to generate strong family dialogue around alcohol and prevent underage drinking.

“HEINEKEN USA takes responsible consumption seriously and is committed to ensuring that alcohol is only consumed by adults 21 and over,” said Stacey Tank, Senior Vice President & Chief Corporate Relations Officer, HEINEKEN USA. “As Alcohol Awareness Month comes to a close, HEINEKEN USA is committed to encouraging parents to have these critical conversations with teens through prom, graduation and beyond. We are proud to support programs that arm parents with fact-based insights on how to have open and impactful conversations with their teens about alcohol to stop underage drinking.”

The Health Alliance on Alcohol is offering new Web articles, infographics and two downloadable books in the new ‘Discuss Alcohol’ series, with additional books to be released in the coming months. The materials provide guidance on how to start fact-based conversations that are age appropriate for children between the ages of 11 and 21. Available immediately, Discuss Alcohol: Underage Drinking provides parents with an overview on how to get these conversations started. Later this week on May 1st from 3 to 3:30 pm (EST), during a webinar with the series author, Dr. Karen Soren, M.D., the program will release its second book, Discuss Alcohol: Prom and Graduation, which focuses on tips parents can offer teens who are preparing for these important milestones. Any media or bloggers interested in participating in this webinar may contact responsibly@heinekenusa.com for registration details.

“Research shows that parents have enormous influence in helping kids and teens decide not to drink underage but many parents struggle with how to get these conversations started and how to create an effective dialogue,” said Karen Soren, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Population and Family Health, Columbia University Medical Center, and the Director of Adolescent Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. “The Health Alliance on Alcohol provides parents and mentors with the facts and conversation starters they need in order to have meaningful and effective dialogues with their teens about how to make smart decisions, minimize risky behavior and stay safe.”
