Switching to Offense in Government – Contractors Conscripted to Join the Fight against Human Trafficking

When the largest single purchaser of goods and services in the world – the U.S. government – puts its weight behind something, companies and organizations take notice. On Sept. 25, 2012 the government announced in no uncertain terms that taxpayer dollars used for government contracting were no longer to support the global scourge of human trafficking. The expectations for companies are swiftly changing and the requirements of this new order go beyond disclosure to certification of a trafficking free supply chain. By spring 2013 the new guidelines will have developed into binding regulations.

Markus Funk, a legal expert and advisor for this new regulation, will give his insights on the changing expectations for sustainability practitioners.

The Role of Government and Businesses in Fighting Human Trafficking in the United States and Around the World

Carolyn B. Maloney

Maloney is the co-chair and co-founder of the Human Trafficking Caucus. She has authored numerous bills to combat the scourge of human trafficking and sex trafficking, including: The Prevention of Trafficking of Tsunami Orphans Act of 2005;The End Demand for Sex Trafficking Act of 2005;The Human Trafficking Fraud Enforcement Act of 2010. In 2012 Maloney joined forces with Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn in a letter to Google questioning how the company's advertising practices addresses human trafficking.
