In the wake of the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) today announced the organizations that will receive $150,000 in community grants for relief and revitalization efforts in devastated communities in New York and along the New Jersey coastline.  This donation is one component of Dow’s $500,000 multi-faceted Hurricane Sandy response plan announced in November.

“Dow is proud to stand together with our collective neighbors in the North East region who are enduring the painstaking process of rebuilding,” said Bo Miller, Dow’s global director of corporate citizenship and president of The Dow Chemical Company Foundation. “Recovery efforts are expected to be long-term and we will continue to find ways to leverage our existing community success programs to contribute in meaningful ways.”

The organizations selected for support have mobilized volunteers, built partnerships and provided shelter, meals and essential supplies to meet immediate and long-term needs exacerbated by Hurricane Sandy.

The organizations receiving grants from Dow include:

  • The Christian Life Church (www.christianlifenj.com), which has offered warm shelter to those without power and organized debris cleanups, and food and clothing drives in Middlesex, N.J;
  • Community FoodBank of New Jersey (www.njfoodbank.org), which is helping coordinate the distribution of more than 200,000 pounds of food each day to families facing loss and rebuilding;
  • FISH, Inc. (www.fishdunellenarea.org), which is distributing food and clothing to the poor, elderly, and homeless in the central New Jersey communities of Dunellen, Middlesex, Piscataway, South Plainfield, Edison and Highland Park;
  • Food Bank For New York City (www.foodbanknyc.org), which is providing vital food and assistance to New Yorkers in need;
  • Gateway Church of Christ (www.gatewaynj.com), which is collecting donations and funds to help families in Union Beach, N.J.;
  • Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund (www.sandynjrelieffund.org), which is led by First Lady Mary Pat Christie to aid relief efforts and to help New Jersey communities rebuild;
  • Long Island Volunteer Center (www.longislandvolunteercenter.org), which has organized thousands of volunteers to help homeless shelters, food bank agencies, animal shelters and debris cleanups;
  • New York Cares (www.newyorkcares.org), which has mobilized volunteers to the hardest hit neighborhoods, delivered meals and cleared homes damaged by the storm; and
  • The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org), which is bringing meals and supplies such as clothing and blankets to New York and New Jersey residents.

In addition to the grants, other components of Dow’s Hurricane Sandy response included a financial pledge to the American Red Cross National Disaster Fund, an employee matching gift program totaling nearly $80,000, and support for humanitarian, technical or product donations for long-term rebuilding needs.
