Cbeyond Inc. (NASDAQ: CBEY), the technology ally to small and mid-sized businesses, was named a 2012 Top 20 Business Community Service Award recipient on Dec 3, 2012.  This award, sponsored by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Trend magazine, recognizes deserving businesses in Cobb County, Georgia for service to the community through support of non-profit organizations.

Two Cobb County based organizations - kidz2leaders, Inc., which provides personal and professional development opportunities to children with incarcerated parents, and The Center for Family Resources, which provides financial and food assistance, employment, education, and housing services - nominated Cbeyond for the award.

Through its career shadow and internship program, Cbeyond provided a paid internship and transportation to a South Cobb High School student nominated by kidz2leaders, which works with students starting in the fourth grade and arranges internships as they develop and reach high school.  During the Cbeyond internship, the student rotated through several different roles to learn about careers in technology as well as business etiquette.

“Cbeyond recognizes the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),” said Rev. Diane H. Parrish, president and founder of kidz2leaders.  “We value our partnership with Cbeyond, and were proud to nominate the company for this prestigious award.”

Cbeyond’s support for the Center for Family Resources includes donating hundreds of employee volunteer hours, as well as technology services.  As part of Cbeyond’s annual Season of Giving, employees donated more than 3,000 food items and volunteered at the Center’s annual ‘Thanks for Giving’ event, which in 2012 provided 1,200 Cobb County households with a meal for Thanksgiving.

“Through our partnership, Cbeyond has not only provided substantial volunteer support, but also much needed technology resources that have helped us continue to help low income families in Cobb County with employment, education, and housing services,” said Jeri Barr, CEO at the Center for Family Resources.  “We are excited that Cbeyond can be recognized with this award.”

The Cobb Chamber also recognized Cbeyond for its involvement in several other 2012 community programs, including:

  • Donating its signature technology services and volunteerism to MUST Ministries’ three Cobb County locations
  • Serving as the technology sponsor for the EDGE Connection’s Kitchen Incubator program, which supports local food entrepreneurs
  • Serving as lunch time reading mentors at Brumby Elementary school as part of the Everybody Wins! Power Lunch reading program
  • Partnering with Communities in Schools of Marietta and Girls Get IT to host a career shadow day for students at Osborne High School, emphasizing the value of pursuing professional goals and potential careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
  • Organizing more than 200 employees to volunteer at Books for Africa, headquartered in Cobb County.

“Our entire organization understands the value of giving back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Joan Tolliver, vice president of human resources at Cbeyond.  “The passion, dedication and commitment our employees have demonstrated make our community programs successful, and we look forward to building on these programs in 2013.”

Cbeyond previously received the Cobb Chamber Business Community Service Award in 2010, nominated by partner MUST Ministries for its involvement with both the organization and larger local community.  Today, the company engages in a diverse array of community involvement initiatives throughout the year in each of the 14 markets it serves.  In 2012, Cbeyond was recognized for its commitment to community involvement with a fourth gold-level U.S. President’s Volunteer Service award, along with Points of Light’s 2012 Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence.
