VITAMIN W Media Launches Her Voice, Her Cause Campaign

Social Enterprise Donates up to $10,000 to Five Women-Focused Nonprofits

VITAMIN W Media, a women-owned news platform, today announced a fundraising campaign to advance the causes that are important to its loyal community of professional and educated women. From November 14 through November 27, VITAMIN W will donate $1 to its five nonprofit partners for every new newsletter subscriber, for a maximum donation of $10,000, or $2,000 for each nonprofit.

“VITAMIN W’s aspiration is to unite the 11 million people who support women’s issues and to use that audience for good,” said Amy-Willard Cross, founder and editor, VITAMIN W.  “Corporations that support women-focused nonprofits generally focus on safe causes such as breast cancer. While this support is important, there are innumerable other issues we need to address, such as increasing women’s participation in government. The goal of Her Voice, Her Cause is to raise awareness for these issues and for the fact that this funding gap exists.”

As part of its business model, VITAMIN W directs a portion of its revenue to women-focused nonprofits. Beginning in 2013, VITAMIN W will also run a series of campaigns in partnership with corporations interested in reaching women in new and positive ways.

A women-owned social enterprise, VITAMIN W is dedicated to creating and curating high quality news for women. Besides news, VITAMIN W’s editorial covers women’s philanthropy and causes, and profiles women leaders and entrepreneurs.

The company was founded in 2011 by Cross, a seasoned editor troubled by a scarcity of women’s voices in journalism. Despite the fact that women dictate consumer spending, men write 81 percent of all news articles, according to Global Media Monitoring Project. Nearly 80 percent of major news articles fail to focus on women-specific content. While dedicated women’s sites exist, Cross believes that the multitude of fashion and gossip women’s sites turn off women seeking more engaging content on women’s issues.

Girls Who Code works to educate, inspire and equip 13- to 17-year-old girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in technology and engineering. Together with leading educators, engineers, and entrepreneurs, Girls Who Code has developed a new model for computer science education, pairing intensive instruction in robotics, web design, and mobile development with high-touch mentorship led by the industry's top female developers and entrepreneurs.

Hollaback! is a nonprofit and  a movement to end street harassment, to ignite public conversations, and to develop innovative strategies to ensure equal access to public spaces. Hollaback! is powered by local activists in 54 cities, 19 countries, and in 12 different languages around the world. In March 2012, Hollaback! partnered with Green Dot to enable people to map their bystander intervention stories on the Hollaback! site. The stories inspire others to provide real-time solutions to street harassment.

Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS), also known as the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective (BWHBC), is a public interest women’s health education, advocacy, and consulting organization. OBOS produces books, collaborates with organizations, and empowers women to become engaged in political aspects of health. OBOS introduced a new concept in women's healthcare: that women can be informed health consumers and health experts with rights to know. OBOS also helped destroy the notion of birth, menopause and aging as pathologies.

The 2012 Project is a national, non-partisan campaign of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University to increase the number of women in Congress and state legislatures by taking advantage of the once-in-a-decade opportunities of 2012. The 2012 Project does outreach to women in the private and public sectors to encourage them to run, mobilizes state-based coalitions, and runs an education campaign to raise awareness about the lack of women in elected office and the opportunities.

Women, Action, & the Media (WAM!) connects and supports media makers, activists, academics and funders working to advance women’s media participation, ownership and representation. WAM!’s work is part of an advocacy movement for gender justice in media. Founded in 2004, WAM! Organizes conferences, workshops and trainings incubate new ideas for social change, provide tools, education and support to remove barriers to media access, production, employment and ownership; and shares information and foster collaborations among individuals and groups.
