Students who live in affordable, subsidized housing will have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of higher education through a scholarship fund that is receiving a donation of $140,000 from Apartment Investment and Management Company (Aimco).   Aimco Senior Vice President Patti Shwayder presented the contribution to Denise Muha, Executive Director of the National Leased Housing Association, for the NLHA Education Fund, which provides tuition assistance through the Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship and several other award categories.  The check presentation took place last week during the NLHA Fall Seminar at the Washington, D.C. Marriott.

“We are so proud to be helping the amazing young men and women through the Education Fund and the Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship.  These talented students come from diverse backgrounds and circumstances, but all share the same goal of earning a college degree,” said Shwayder.  “Our scholars are smart, hard-working, and have demonstrated a desire to give back to their communities.    The Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship is an important component of Aimco’s corporate citizenship efforts, and we hope sustained financial support will help these deserving students realize their full potential and have a bright future.”

Aimco Senior Vice President, Patti Shwayder, presented a check for $140,000 from the Aimco Cares Charity Golf Classic proceeds to Terri Preston, NLHA Education Fund Board Chair.  They are joined by Denise Muha, Executive Director of the National Leased Housing Association, far right, and Jorge Rosa of Cushman & Wakefield, far left.  Cushman was a $10,000 platinum-level corporate sponsor of the tournament this year and has made a significant contribution to the event since 2010.

The scholarships are awarded based on financial need, scholastic merit, community leadership and volunteerism.

“NLHA is very pleased to have Aimco as a partner in our ongoing efforts to promote   educational opportunities and self-sufficiency to students in affordable housing across the country,” said Muha. “We’ve learned that the scholarship program can make a difference in whether a student in affordable housing can go to college.  We appreciate Aimco’s continued generosity and its commitment to supporting the Education Fund.”

Aimco’s donation is a result of the proceeds raised during the company’s annual Charity Golf Classic sponsored by its philanthropic arm, Aimco Cares, and presented by RE/MAX.  More than 120 golfers participated in the 2012 charity tournament with more 84 companies providing sponsorships to raise funds for the event held at Sanctuary Golf Course in Sedalia, Colorado.  Platinum sponsors, contributing $10,000 or more, were Apartment Guide, the tournament’s largest contributor;  Apartment Finder; Apartment Realty Advisors;  Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck; CBRE; Conservice; Cushman & Wakefield; Harris Winick, LLP; Hosting.com; Institutional Property Advisors; Jones Lang LaSalle; Karndean Design Flooring; Kutak Rock LLP; Lockton; Quantum; RealPage; Southeast Apartment Partners; Transwestern; and Wilmar.

This year’s tournament co-beneficiaries are the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which provides a network of support services for families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty, and Project Sanctuary, a nonprofit that helps military personnel reconnect with their families when they return from military service.
