A new energy efficiency contest, “America’s Cutest Lil’ Energy Savers” will be launched by Green America and Consumers Union on October 1, 2012.

Open to the public and with prizes up to $250, the contest will consist of children’s video entries detailing how households can save energy. Video submissions can be made from October 1st through October 15th

An online voting period will begin on October 16th and last through October 31st, with voting open to the public.

Shannon Baker-Branstetter, policy council, Energy and Environment/Consumers Union and the Advocacy and Policy Division of Consumer Reports, said: “This is a fun way to be creative about saving energy, which is good for the planet and good for your wallet.

Todd Larsen, corporate responsibility director, Green America, said: “Children know the simple truth: that saving energy is the smart thing to do. America’s Cutest Lil’ Energy Savers gives kids all over the country a fun way to help us all save energy and save money at the same time.

People living in the Washington DC area will have the opportunity to enter the contest early.  On September 29th and 30th, Green America will be hosting its Washington, DC Green Festival. There will be a video camera set up in the Green Kids’ Zone at 3 PM both days to film children’s entries.  The first 75 children that enter the contest at the Green Festival will be given a t-shirt, coloring books or toy donated by North Star Toys, Reach and Teach, Taraluna, and Syracuse Cultural Workers.
