Bayer Sponsors Youth Program in Washington, D. C., Celebrating World

Submitted by Bayer

For the sixth consecutive year, Bayer Corporation has teamed up with the United Nations Environment Programme’s Regional Office for North America (UNEP RONA) to celebrate World Environment Day (WED) by sponsoring a series of youth-oriented environmental education programs in Washington, the 2012 WED host city in North America.

The Bayer-sponsored programs taking place at Woodrow Wilson High School include an astronaut-led interactive workshop for high schoolers and a Making Science Make Sense® booth at the WED Fair and Environmental Expo.

Bayer and UNEP also are sponsoring the International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment annual art exhibition, and Bayer is participating in the U.S. Department of Education’s first-ever Green Ribbon Schools event.

Astronaut-Led Student Workshop

Dr. Mae C. Jemison, former astronaut, environmental sustainability advocate and Bayer’s longtime national spokesperson for its Making Science Make Sense ® (MSMS) program, led more than 60 Woodrow Wilson High School students during the hands-on, interactive workshop, “Green Living, Green Working.”

Working in teams, the students used Dr. Jemison’s The Earth We Share™ curriculum to address “green” issues related to health, energy, recreation, education, the economy and biodiversity.

The students consulted experts from Bayer, UNEP and other industry, education, regional government and non-governmental representatives.

“We are proud to partner with Bayer once again on World Environment Day. This workshop and other environmental education initiatives provide these students an extremely valuable lesson in how green practices can substantially improve our communities and our world, while at the same time providing significant economic opportunities,” said Amy Fraenkel, Director, UNEP RONA.

“Understanding humans' role in the environment is a fundamental component of science education. Something Bayer and I have long worked on together,” said
Dr. Jemison. “Today, the students considered how their daily lives impact and can also be improved by living 'green' by using key science literacy skills -- observation, inquiry, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving.”

ICPC Awards Ceremony and Exhibition

At Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the central library of the Washington library system, Bayer will unveil the 2012 exhibition of the 21st annual International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment and will introduce this year’s winners, including the global winner, who hails from California, North American first- and second-place winners and the two “Washington’s Best” winners. The exhibition will be open to the public June 5 – July 31, 2012.

U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools Initiative

Bayer Corporation is a sponsor of the inaugural U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools National Awards program taking place June 3 – 5, 2012, in Washington. Bayer's Lauren Trocano will facilitate a workshop focusing on best practice public-private partnerships. The Green Ribbon Schools program recognizes exemplary achievement in environmental impact, health and education in the nation’s schools.
