The NBCUniversal Foundation will partner with the NBC Owned Television Stations to launch a new signature program to provide a total of $1.2 million in grants to nonprofit organizations. The initiative, called 21st Century Solutions, will enable non-profits implementing new and innovative programs to compete for funding in the ten local communities served by the NBC owned stations.

“There are so many nonprofit organizations moving our communities forward through innovative thinking and progressive approaches,” said Beth Colleton, Senior Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, NBCUniversal. “Via our partnership with the NBC Owned Television Stations, we hope 21st Century Solutions will bring awareness to, spark dialogue about and deliver needed support to pioneering programs that are solving social challenges in their local markets in new ways.”

21st Century Solutions supports high-impact, innovative programs in the categories of:

  • Arts and Media
  • Civic Engagement
  • Community Development
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Jobs and Economic Empowerment
  • Technology and Innovation

The funding will come from the NBCUniversal Foundation while the ten stations will help promote the program and create a dialog about local social entrepreneurship as well as the impact on their city. Qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations wishing to compete in the grant challenge can review the eligibility criteria and complete applications on the NBC stations’ websites in the ten cities: Chicago, Connecticut, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington, DC.

“This is a great opportunity for us to work with local organizations that are doing innovative work,” said Valari Staab, President of the NBC Owned Television Stations. “Our local stations are thrilled to be able to support initiatives that will make a real difference in their communities.”

One local organization and two runners-up will be awarded grants in each city. Through this competitive grant process, the program aims to help communities identify opportunities for positive change and support nonprofits that are putting new ideas into action.

Applications must be received by August 15th and winners will be announced this fall.
