Further demonstrating the company’s commitment to global sustainability, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas released its 2009/2010 Corporate Sustainability Report on August 12, 2011. An educational advocate for corporate responsibility, the industry leader developed the report to spotlight the rise and relevancy of significant industry developments, including sustainability and safety.

"We believe this approach is absolutely fundamental to delivering sustainable solutions for our employees, customers and stakeholders."

To further embrace sustainability as a long-term business initiative, the company implemented a program to support efforts to integrate sustainable practices throughout all of its practices worldwide. Recognizing corporate responsibility as a key driver to enhancing performance, sustainable value is delivered in four areas people, product, planet and profit. ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas places strong emphases on putting people first, valuing safety, integrity and keeping a commitment to the communities where they operate.

“Our 2008 Corporate Sustainability Report was a very important step towards the commitment of reporting our plans and objectives to ensure a legacy of environmental protection for the world,” said Nemeth. “And defining specific goals, such as recognizing the company’s responsibility and role in promoting environmental stewardship, has become essential to ensure ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas becomes a valued community partner.”

From creating a certified, carbon-neutral plant in Brazil to building bicycles for children in underprivileged neighborhoods, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas is working hard to embed sustainability within the core operations and culture of the company. They understand the world’s resources are finite and that their company’s actions and operations have an impact on the environment. For example, the company has been working to reduce energy consumption, eliminate waste and develop programs and measured initiatives to support a healthy environment.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas has identified four key objectives to help fulfill its vision — green customer solutions, energy efficiency, waste nothing and social responsibility. These objectives make up the foundation of the company’s sustainability goals, which exist to ensure wise and efficient use of all resources.

Other sustainable initiative milestones highlighted in the report include:

  • Continuing advancement in the areas of sustainable product design, customer support on green-building standards, modernization of existing elevators and bringing sustainable customer solutions to market.
  • Expanding focus, commitment and rigor to the planet in 2009 and 2010 by completing the ISO 14001 certification process for all U.S. manufacturing plants for environmental management practices, launching the TKEarth.com microsite to educate and engage employees, and transitioning to an upgraded environmental management system.

    On June 3, 2011, the 2009/2010 Corporate Sustainability Report received an “A” rating from The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a company that seeks to mainstream disclosure on environmental, social and governance performance. Sustainability reports based on the GRI Framework can be used for the following: to demonstrate organizational commitment to sustainable development; to compare organizational performance over time; and to measure organizational performance with respect to laws, norms, standards and voluntary initiatives. Companies with an “A” rating are required to implement the GRI principles and reflect complete materiality assessment and stakeholder engagement, as well as report on all management disclosures.
