Two Minnesota seventh-graders who created an elementary school lesson plan on good hand hygiene practices received a national award and $5,000 for their school to support the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) local chapter's work on hygiene education.

Fulda (Minnesota) High School students Taylor Schettler and Siera Steiner were honored July 11 at the annual leadership conference of the FCCLA in Anaheim, California in front of more than 5,000 teachers and students. They received the Top Classroom Award from the "Healthy Schools, Healthy People: It's a SNAP" program

Since 2002, SNAP (School Network for Absenteeism Prevention) annually recognizes students who developed in-school education programs that teach the importance of everyday handwashing. SNAP is a joint project of the American Cleaning Institute (www.cleaninginstitute.org) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The SNAP program honors student leaders who take the initiative to make their schools clean and healthy," said Nancy Bock, ACI Vice President of Consumer Education. "The Fulda, Minnesota students creatively used education resources from ACI and the Mayo Clinic to develop lesson plans, teach elementary school students, start a handwashing pledge program and track absenteeism rates."

Students Taylor Schettler and Siera Steiner, along with their teacher and FCCLA adviser, Marcine Elder, were presented with a $5,000 check for their school, courtesy of ACI members Arylessence, Inc., Colgate-Palmolive Company, Ecolab Inc., GOJO Industries, Inc., and Henkel Consumer Goods Inc. Additionally, Fulda High School will receive hygiene and cleaning product donations, thanks to Colgate-Palmolive Company, Georgia-Pacific Professional, GOJO Industries, Inc., Henkel Consumer Goods Inc. and Water Journey Ltd.

The Fulda students received an all expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. and met their legislators on Capitol Hill, including Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar and Rep. Timothy Walz. The students were also recognized at a June 16 ceremony at ACI headquarters in front of ACI's Board of Directors.
