CINCINNATI, Jan. 26 /CSRwire/ - Procter & Gamble [NYSE: PG] today announces expansion of its renewable energy portfolio by unveiling a wind turbine at P&G's pet care plant in Coevorden, Netherlands and extending its commitment to solar energy with the installation of solar panels at its Beauty & Grooming plant in Cologne, Germany.
The Coevorden turbine is the Company's first investment in wind energy and will be operational starting today. The wind power will supply approximately 17% of the plant's annual energy consumption. The turbine is estimated to produce approximately 5,500 megawatt hours of energy per year, enough to power up to 1,500 houses in the Netherlands.

Additionally, P&G is planning to have solar panels installed atop one of its plants in Cologne, Germany with plans to extend to other sites in the region. An estimated 796 MWh/year of energy will be produced by this initial installation; enough to power approximately 200 households in Germany and contribute to a reduction of 544 metric tons of CO2 per year. Construction on the solar panels will commence in the spring of 2011 and is expected to begin producing electricity in summer of 2011.
"These investments are another example of P&G's commitment to sustainability and our continuous drive to operate more sustainably while simultaneously reducing energy costs," said Keith Harrison, P&G global product supply officer. "The addition of wind power to our energy portfolio enhances the Company's diversified portfolio approach to renewable energy, which allows us the flexibility to maximize efficiency and decrease dependency on conventional petroleum-based energy sources."
The Netherlands and German plants join other P&G sites in the US, Germany, and Mexico making progress in renewable energy use. The achievements of these plants demonstrate P&G's continued progress toward achieving its long-term environmental vision to power plants with 100% renewable energy and its 2020 goal to power plants with 30% renewable energy.
"Due to the commitment of our employees and external partners, we are making meaningful progress toward our long-term environmental sustainability vision," said Len Sauers, P&G vice president of global sustainability. "Innovation and external partnerships are key components of a successful sustainability program. No one company can do it alone. It is important for companies to collaborate with external partners to tackle important topics that impact both our world and our businesses."
