MIDLAND, Mich., Jan. 17 /CSRwire/ - In response to the devastating floods that have ravaged Australia, The Dow Chemical Company is donating $200,000 to the Queensland Premier's Flood Relief Appeal facilitated to assist in emergency relief operations.
"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all who are suffering in the face of this disaster, particularly those who have lost friends or family members," said Andrew N. Liveris, Dow Chairman and CEO. "As an Australian native who attended the University of Queensland, and with family in Southeast Queensland, I cannot help but be touched by the magnitude of suffering and loss."
Heavy rains since November, followed by the worst flash flooding in 50 years, have devastated the state of Queensland, with a still-rising toll of the dead and missing, and property damage in the billions of dollars.
In addition to the donation of $200,000 to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal, Dow Australia will be working closely with its customers and industry to identify projects that support long-term recovery in the region. Dow Australia Ltd. has operated for more than 50 years with several hundred employees at manufacturing sites in Altona and Geelong, and business centers in Altona, Camberwell and Sydney.
In recent years Dow has provided relief and direct rebuilding and revitalization efforts to such events as last year's earthquake in Haiti, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike on the U.S. Gulf Coast, and the 2004 tsunami and earthquakes in Asia Pacific.
