PLANO, Texas, Dec. 06 /CSRwire/ - Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (NYSE:DPS) today announced that it has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry to significantly reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.
By signing on with SmartWay, DPS will contribute to the Partnership's goal to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of its transportation operations. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog.
DPS's SmartWay involvement covers the transportation of its finished beverages by third-party carriers from its manufacturing and warehouse facilities to its distribution centers and customer warehouses, as well as shipments of beverage concentrates and various raw materials to bottling plants across North America.
DPS also continues to make strides in reducing the environmental footprint of its DSD fleet. Since 2008, the company has launched initiatives to improve efficiency on its more than 5,000 delivery routes and replaced more than 800 commercial vehicles with more fuel efficient models. All new commercial motor vehicles have systems to electronically control speed, as well as five-minute idle shut-down technology. In addition, the company is now considering ways to integrate alternative energy vehicles into its fleet.
Tim Gratto, DPS vice president of sustainability, said joining SmartWay complements the five-year environmental sustainability goals the company announced earlier this year with the release of its first corporate social responsibility report, "Sustainability in ACTION."

It's a milestone in our ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing and delivering our products to our valued customers and consumers," said Gratto. "Earlier this year, we announced a goal to ship 20 percent more product for every gallon of fuel used in our company-owned DSD fleet operations by 2015. Now, as part of SmartWay, we're taking meaningful steps to address the impacts of our third-party shipping, as well."
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial strategies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies.
