Tomorrow, the most important and influential business, finance and government leaders in the climate change arena are coming together with more than 100 high-level speakers, and the largest coalition of financiers at the inaugural World Climate Summit, December 4-5, at The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, Mexico, in parallel to the UNFCCC COP 16.

The World Climate Summit follows up the successful launch of Business Action for Climate 2010 with His Excellency, President Felipe Calderon, United States of Mexico, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and a panel discussion of business and NGO leaders moderated by Charlie Rose with Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company, Andrew Liveris, Chairman and CEO, The Dow Chemical Company, James E. Rogers, Chairman, President, and CEO, Duke Energy, José Antonio Fernández, Chairman and CEO, FEMSA, and Carter Roberts, President and CEO, WWF-US.

At Business Action for Climate, Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company said, "Now is the time for business, government and civil society to truly take the lead in driving innovation and helping move the planet toward a lower carbon future that supports economic development and job growth. The good news is that many of the solutions are already available, but we need to create conditions for private sector investment and innovation to thrive."

The World Climate Summit 2010 is the beginning of a new, open and collaborative global 10-year framework dedicated to helping governments, businesses and financiers accelerate solutions to climate change. The World Climate Summit is bringing more than 300 leading companies, financiers and government leaders to implement, scale and collaborate on bottom-up solutions to climate change to help reach regional and global 2020 targets. Participants will identify, initiate, and build out the business models, financing mechanisms, policies, projects, and practices needed for creating a global low-carbon economy.

"We have 10 years to scale and implement existing solutions globally. Cancun will be the beginning of this global transformation, with the business and finance community driving this change." Jens Nielsen & Michael Mathres, Founders, World Climate Summit

Some key highlights of the World Climate Summit include:

  • Sir Richard Branson, Ted Turner, Lord Stern, Emilio Azcarraga, President of Grupo Televisa, and more than 100 high-level speakers confirmed from more than 20 industries

  • Convening, under the leadership of The UNEP Finance Initiative, the largest network of investors and financial intermediaries demanding climate change action ever assembled - representing more than $20 trillions of assets under management.

  • Introducing new global initiatives and the launch of the Carbon War Room Gigaton Awards - the Oscars of sustainable business - celebrating cities, companies and leaders tackling climate change.

"The global climate challenge provides an urgent imperative to build a global clean economy that can deliver greater prosperity, health, and security, and be the engine of our economic recovery. At the World Climate Summit, participants will get down to the practical work of making this more sound future a reality." Aimee Christensen, Program Chair, World Climate Summit
