Charitable giving in the U.S. dropped 3.2 percent between 2008 and 2009; this was the first annual decline in giving, based on current dollars, since 1987. Even so, there are now more than 1.5 million nonprofits in the U.S., and 161,000 in Canada, reflecting a 35 percent increase in the number of organizations in the past decade.
