National Grid Publishes 09/10 CR Review

Energy company National Grid has published its 2009/10 Corporate Responsibility Review, 'Shaping a Responsible Future', at http://ethicalperformance.com/reports/links/nati-pdf.

The Review complements the company's online corporate responsibility report published in July. It provides an overview of CR strategy and highlights four areas of activity: climate change and energy; customer service, talent, inclusion and diversity; and community investment and volunteering.

Highlights of National Grid's CR activities and performance in 2009/10 include:

  • Lost time injury frequency rate equated to 0.15 compared with 0.25 in 2008/09, a 40 per cent decrease; while employee lost time injuries fell to 86 compared with 140 in 2008/09.

  • 55 per cent reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared with a 1990 baseline; Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 8.8 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent, compared with 11.3 million tonnes in 2008/09.

  • The company met all US gas distribution regulatory standards of service regarding service quality indices and performance measures and met all but one UK gas distribution regulatory standards of service. It also met all US electricity distribution regulatory standards of service.

  • More than £3.3 billion was invested in new assets during 2009/10; a total of £14 billion over the past five years. The company forecasts that it will invest up to £22 billion over the next five years.

National Grid owns the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales and operates the system across Great Britain. It also owns and operates the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain and its distribution business delivers gas to 11 million homes and businesses.

In the US, it delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island, and manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).
