  • Commitment supports the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals to provide universal primary education by 2015

  • More than 70 percent of Dell's contribution will help young people in underserved communities outside of the United States

Dell announced today its commitment to give $10 million in cash and Dell technology towards education technology initiatives in 2011 in connection with the United Nations Private Sector Forum on the Millennium Development Goals. More than 70 percent of Dell's contributions will help young people in underserved communities outside of the United States through initiatives like the company's signature program, Dell YouthConnect.

Designed to help develop 21st century skills like critical thinking, communication and collaboration, YouthConnect prepares young people ranging from the early childhood to secondary level to learn and work alongside their peers around the world whose schools and communities may be better resourced.

In addition, through innovative educational initiatives and technology access, youth are empowered to solve critical community issues, engage in creative problem solving and are better prepared to participate in the global economy.

In 2009, Dell YouthConnect provided resources to 26 non-profit and non-governmental organizations in underserved communities, totalling $8 million to support 350,000 children in eight countries.

One of several examples of YouthConnect projects is with UNICEF Morocco where the Moroccan Ministry of Youth and UNICEF provides technology access to 6,000 young people in some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged areas of the country. Also, Dell volunteers train young Moroccans to develop their IT skills, helping to increase their employability.

Trisa Thompson, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for Dell
"While we’ve made tremendous progress in reaching more than 1 million children through our giving programs this year, we realize we can do even more to help the world's young people develop the skills they need to reach their full potential. Our commitment is to provide the technology and know-how to help the next generation be successful in their local communities and the global workforce."
