Scavenger Crawl, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that aims to build awareness and advocacy for Bay Area non-profits through a scavenger hunt and pub crawl event, has been granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the United States Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has classified Scavenger Crawl as a public charity, which means that contributions to the organization are tax-exempt.

Scavenger Crawl creates community-based scavenger hunts that include a series of clues and puzzles that require teams to solve in order to get to the ending point. The crawl portion lands teams at different restaurants, bars, and retail shops throughout San Francisco where they will have an opportunity to see the City's many beautiful sights. Moreover, participants have the chance to learn more about the good things that are going on around the community. Scavenger Crawl provides a platform for its local business and non-profit partners to interact with the community as they host a challenge of their own.

Scavenger Crawl welcomes Whirlwind Wheelchair International to the 3rd bi-annual Scavenger Crawl race to be held Sunday, June 6, 2010. Whirlwind is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities in the developing world and promoting sustainable local economic development whenever possible. For thirty years Whirlwind has focused on producing durable, low-cost and highly functional wheelchairs, which are designed and produced in close collaboration with wheelchair riders. These chairs give riders the reliable and functional mobility they need to reach their full potential. "¨

Whirlwind is a program of San Francisco State University's Institute for Civic and Community Engagement and is an international expression of SFSU's social justice mission. Through regional medium-scale manufacturing in the developing world and small local shops, Whirlwind has benefited tens of thousands of wheelchair riders in over 40 countries. Whirlwind products are differentiated by their usefulness for the rider, design using locally available materials for repair-ability, low cost, and long lifespan.

In addition, non-profits Rebuilding Together San Francisco and the Net Impact Bay Area Chapters, as well as in-kind sponsors Sports Basement, Timbuk2, Gordon Biersch, Signographics, POM Wonderful, Copy Central, and Yelp will participate in the June Scavenger Crawl. Event proceeds will benefit the non-profit that brings the most registered participants to the event.
