ING employees will celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 18 - 24, and Earth Day, April 22, through volunteerism projects and awareness activities. With nearly 10,000 employees in 12 major cities across the United States, ING will partner with nonprofit organizations to address community needs and promote environmental consciousness among employees. Employees will volunteer to mentor students, pick up trash and beautify area communities. Encouraging bike-to-work week, "lights-out hours," organizing clothing drives, purse auctions, game swaps and environmental movie viewings are just a few activities designed to heighten employees' awareness of how small efforts can collectively have a positive impact on the environment.

"ING's national volunteer and environmental teams are responsible for engaging employees year-round to help manage social dilemmas in our community," says Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and senior vice president, ING's Office of Corporate Responsibility and Multicultural Affairs. "Focusing our volunteerism and environmental efforts during a week in April provides the opportunity to combine our activities in a bigger way."

ING demonstrates its commitment to the environment through its Orange Goes Green campaign. The company is not only investing in green energy and employee-awareness programs, but also taking a holistic approach by engaging areas across the business in purchasing a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste copy paper, formatting copiers and printers to duplex printing, and adopting green cleaning and cafeteria programs. Some measurable results from 2009 include:

  • 17% reduction in energy consumption across U.S. locations.

  • 26% (121 tons) reduction in copy paper purchasing.

  • 54% (582 tons) reduction in landfill waste.

  • 61% (771 tons) of generated waste recycled.
