UPS (NYSE:UPS) has been ranked No. 9 among the Top 100 global companies selected for the first-ever Climate Innovation Index by Maplecroft, a UK-based research and consulting company that reports on sustainability-related risks.

UPS ranked No. 6 among the largest 100 U.S. companies and was the only transportation company in the Top 10.

Maplecroft rates corporations based on performance in five areas: quality of management on climate issues; mitigation of carbon emissions; carbon reporting; the use of innovative technologies and business practices that capitalize on climate-related opportunities, and "adaption," which is how companies address climate challenges within their operations. More than 300 companies were ranked.

"Climate change is one of the most significant risks to sustainable economic growth," said Maplecroft CEO Professor Alyson Warhurst. "The Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes will empower investors to identify and direct capital toward companies that are both developing climate-solutions and delivering sustained economic growth."

The Maplecroft ranking is the latest in a long list of honors marking UPS's environmental leadership. Recently, UPS earned the top score in the consumer shipping sector of "Climate Counts," a ranking of businesses on the measurement and reduction of climate impact, their corporate support of public policy initiatives on climate change and transparency in reporting. UPS also is on the Carbon Disclosure Project's Global Leadership Index.
