American Open: a new way for nonprofit organizations to drum up excitement, expand their online fundraising presence, and improve year-end fundraising outcomes

GlobalGiving announced that it will launch a second American Open event, American Open II, this October due the success of the first American Open event launched in June.

"Working with GlobalGiving.org gave us the impetus to reach out to our donors in a fresh and interesting way. We used GlobalGiving's online tools and training and as a result raised money from nearly 200 new donors that had never given to us before. The money we raised is critical to our success over the next year. We also received media coverage that would never have happened without GlobalGiving."

Who We Are
GlobalGiving.org is an online marketplace that connects individual and institutional donors to high-impact, grassroots projects all over the world. Founded by two former World Bank executives, we have a proven track record helping nonprofit leaders access new sources of funds for their work. To date, we have raised over $21 million for 1,300 projects.

Why American Open Now?
In June 2009, based on donor demand, GlobalGiving launched the American Open, an initiative to attract new organizations doing work in the United States. Participating organizations were challenged to use the GlobalGiving platform to raise at least $4,000 from 50 or more donors - those succeeding were invited to join GlobalGiving and access our tools and resources to support their fundraising efforts on an ongoing basis. In just three weeks, the first American Open raised $337,000, and 48 organizations now have their projects posted on GlobalGiving.org.

This success clearly demonstrated a need in these tough economic times for an online marketing partner to assist non-profits in their fundraising capacity.

American Open II - Why and How
Strong interest from the nonprofit community has encouraged us to host a second American Open event this fall. Please help us get the word out to nominate organizations that would benefit from increased exposure through the GlobalGiving network.

Benefits of working with GlobalGiving.org include:

  • Ability to leverage GlobalGiving's partner relationships: we have an extensive network of corporate partners, and projects may be eligible for employee and corporate giving campaigns and matching funds from organizations including Nike, HP, Gap, Ford Motor Company, Yahoo, Intel, and Dell Computer. Our foundation partners also support giving initiatives, and include Omidyar Network, the Skoll Foundation, the WK Kellogg Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, and the Packard Foundation;
  • Exposure and promotion to the media: GlobalGiving has been featured in major media outlets including the New York Times, CNN, and the Washington Post;
  • The GlobalGiving Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization and provides tax receipts directly to US donors who give through our website;
  • Individual donors can make donations as small as $10 so anyone can make an impact;
  • Access to a wide variety of customized marketing and fundraising tools that support your development efforts. These include full online giving capability, including a "personalized landing page" on the GlobalGiving website for each project you post on the site;
  • Viral communication tools to help spread the word - personalized widgets, email templates, online marketing and social media tips, and ability to communicate directly with donors through the GlobalGiving website;
  • Opportunity to participate in periodic marketing and fundraising promotions, some of which offer matching funds or bounty awards;
  • Alternative gift options are made available to donors such as gift cards and donating to your project "in honor of" someone;
  • Opportunity for you to engage your donors in different ways and invite them to start gift registries and fundraisers for your project and track their success;

How to Participate in American Open II
Interested organizations should complete an application and submit due diligence by October 2, 2009. The actual fundraising "challenge" will take place from October 27 - November 30, 2009. In addition to earning a spot on the GlobalGiving website, project organizations meeting the threshold of raising $4,000 from at least 50 unique donors can also compete for additional funding: the three projects receiving the most funding will receive additional awards of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000, respectively; the project receiving the most number of donations will receive an additional $3,000.
