Mr. Peter Michel Heilmann, President, EuroCharity, has signed The Copenhagen Communiqué from The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change (CLG).

The Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change is set to become the definitive statement from the international business community ahead of the Conference of the Parties 15 (COP15) in Copenhagen in December (http://en.cop15.dk/). The CLG's target target of 500 company signatories from across the globe, with every G20 country represented, has been exceeded -- and more are coming in on a daily basis.

Synthesising some of the key thinking on climate change that has come from business over the last two years, the Communiqué calls for an "ambitious, robust and equitable global deal on climate change that responds credibly to the scale and urgency of the crises facing the world today".
The Communiqué:

  • will be officially handed over to Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, by The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders' Group on Climate Change in collaboration with its new Global Partner, the United Nations Global Compact;

  • will reinforce the message that a large part of the global business community wants an effective international climate framework in a short, punchy statement, synthesising some of the key thinking that has come from business over the last two years;

  • builds on the Bali and Poznań Communiqués initiated by the group ahead of previous international climate conferences;

  • a short, punchy statement, synthesising some of the key thinking that has come from business over the last two years;

  • text and formal sign-up process was launched in London on June 29, 2009 at a landmark event entitled "Copenhagen & Beyond", which was attended by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.

The deadline for signatures was set for today, Friday, September 11, 2009. However, endorsements will still be accepted until mid-November 2009. More signatories are particularly needed in Indonesia, Argentina, Russia, India, Turkey and China.

The official global launch will be taking place at the United Nations in New York on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

The global media launch of the Communiqué with all its signatures will take place at the United Nations on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 and the aim is to personally hand it to UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon at a public event in New York in advance of the United Nations General Assembly Climate Summit.

Commenting on his endorsement of the short, punchy statement, Mr. Heilmann said: "I have signed The Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change on behalf of EuroCharity partly because I believe that we as business leaders need to send a strong, crystal-clear and united message to world leaders ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in December. With less than 100 days to go to the end of this forthcoming summit, I expect -- even demand of -- them not to sign just any agreement in Copenhagen, but to agree on a bold, visionary, sufficiently ambitious, effective, robust and globally equitable deal that will really make a world of difference for all of us here on this Planet.

"The problem of climate change is solvable, but it's time to get serious! We need political will without any feet dragging; we need global co-ordination and action; and we all need to understand that creating a greener future and low-carbon carbon global economy go hand in hand with creating new jobs and opportunities, spurring new investments, driving technological solutions and innovation, enhancing entrepreneurship and competitiveness, creating better and more healthy living conditions, and enhancing the quality of life and environment for all of us sharing this precious Earth. We simply have no more time to waste...

"EuroCharity has also signed and is pro-actively promoting the United Nations Global Compact's ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption enjoy universal consensus. We are therefore happy to learn that the UN Global Compact has become the new Global Partner of The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders' Group on Climate Change."

About CLG
The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change (CLG) brings together business leaders from major UK, EU and international companies who believe that there is an urgent need to develop new and longer-term policies for tackling climate change.

At present there are two groups -- a UK group, and an EU group. The groups are cross-sector, encompassing energy producers, manufacturers, banks, retailers, utilities and others. They have been active since 2005 in progressing action on climate change, working with national governments, international fora and within the business community. The UK CLG and EU CLG join forces to call for action on the international agenda.

The Corporate Leaders Groups have been developed and are managed by The University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership on behalf of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.
2009 is a crucial year for the climate change agenda which, it is hoped, will culminate in a new international climate deal being signed in Copenhagen in December. Both The Bali and Poznań Communiques have played an important role in building momentum in the international climate negotiations. They have, amongst other things, reinforced the message to governments that a large part of the international business community wants a strong and effective international climate framework.

This year there are even bolder ambitions than before!
