AT&T Announces Industrial Ecology Research Grants

Bedminster, NJ - AT&T today announced Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowships grants to researchers from six leading universities.

Industrial Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that studies industrial and economic systems and their linkage with natural systems. The universities receiving grants are:

-- Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz., for "Fellowship in Sustainable Technologies: Supporting Industrial Ecology Initiatives in Rapidly Urbanizing Regions";

-- Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., for "Diversifying Industrial Ecology in Higher Education II: Extending 'Institutional Ecology' for Material Flow Analysis Instruction and Research";

-- Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the United Nations University, Tokyo, for "Effects of Computer Usage Patterns on The Life Cycle Energy Consumption of IT Infrastructure";

-- Leiden University, Netherlands, for "Materials and Energy Terms of Information Society --Measuring the Weight of Information";

-- The Pennsylvania State University in Pittsburgh Park, Pa., for "Using Ontologies for Sharing Scientific Information About the Environment"; and,

-- Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, for "Integrating Functional and Regional Approaches in Industrial Ecology for Studying Urban Metabolism: Towards a Holistic Methodology in Earth System Engineering."

The winning researchers each receive $25,000 and are designated "AT&T Faculty Fellows in Industrial Ecology."

"The quality of the proposals we are funding as part of the AT&T Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship program continues to be outstanding this year," said Brad Allenby, AT&T Environment, Health and Safety vice president.

"We are proud to support research of this caliber, which will help contribute to building a better world now and in the future."

The AT&T Foundation encourages academic research in Industrial Ecology by awarding these fellowships to advance this emerging field of study and to educate students on non-traditional ways of increasing both environmental and economic efficiency.
