Published 12-18-02

Submitted by AT&T Inc.

BEDMINSTER, NJ, -AT&T employees have volunteered 4 million hours -- the equivalent of 167,000 days, 456 years, or six lifetimes -- at community-service organizations around the world since 1996. These facts and figures are among the highlights of the "AT&T Corporate Citizenship Report" released today.

The report describes AT&T's corporate-citizenship values and actions, which span the company's 117-year history. In 1911, for example, AT&T employees established the Telephone Pioneers of America, a service organization that undertakes projects addressing education, the environment, disaster-relief, health care and other charitable work. Today, more than 56,000 AT&T employees and retirees are Pioneers members. Between January 2001 and June 2002, they volunteered more than 675,000 hours to community-service projects.

"Over the years, AT&T has seen many organizational, structural and leadership changes, but our values have never wavered," said Esther Silver-Parker, president of the AT&T Foundation, which coordinates the largest shareof the company's philanthropy. "Our Corporate Citizenship Report is one more way to demonstrate our commitment to customer service, ethical business practices and social responsibility."

Additional report highlights include:

* Philanthropy: AT&T has contributed nearly $120 million in cash, products and services to nonprofit organizations since January 2001.

* Supplier Diversity: AT&T has spent more than $14 billion with minority-and women-owned suppliers since 1968.

* Education: The AT&T Labs Fellowship Program, which provides graduate-education support for women and minority students in science and engineering, celebrated 30 years of mentoring in 2002.

* Environment: AT&T employees who telework reduce pollutant air emissions by almost 45,000 tons a year.
