Health Care Infrastructure Focus of Global Health Council Annual Meeting
Infrastructure is the subject of this year's Global Health Council (GHC) annual meeting. One unique program in Tanzania is addressing this bottleneck head on and laying the groundwork for PEPFAR treatment programs: Tanzania Care, a public-private partnership of the Abbott Fund and the Tanzania Ministry of Health, is strengthening the country's public health infrastructure at every point, including modernizing the national hospital's outpatient treatment center and laboratories; creating a national system of referral hospitals; improving hospital management, administration and systems; training health care staff; and expanding health capacity and HIV testing nationwide, thereby increasing the entry points for patients into treatment and care.
A special session at the GHC meeting will feature experts directly involved in the program in Tanzania, and will discuss progress, as well as the technical, managerial and political challenges encountered, lessons learned and how the private and public sectors can combine their core competencies to improve health care.
