Albertsons Receives ''Promise To The Earth'' Award From The National Arbor Day Foundation

The award was presented to Albertsons in recognition of the company's contribution to the National Arbor Day Foundation's efforts to plant trees across the nation. Albertsons sold the Foundation's Gift Trees in its floral department and gift aisles during the Arbor Day 2004 season, with a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the trees helping to support the Foundation's tree-planting efforts throughout the country.
"We are dedicated to doing our part to help protect the environment in the communities we serve while making it easier for our customers to participate in the conservation process," said Barbara Russell, Albertsons director of environmental affairs.
Upon receiving the "Promise to the Earth" award at Saturday's ceremonies, Albertsons pledged to donate 10,000 seedlings to the National Arbor Day Foundation's special "Tree Trunk" program. This new program will provide trees to communities nationwide that have suffered massive tree loss due to natural disasters, such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes or ice storms. The Albertsons seedlings would be the first donation deposited into the "Tree Trunk" fund.
The "Promise to the Earth" award comes on the heels of Albertsons' announcement last month that it has added environmental stewardship to its annual focus areas for charitable giving. The company has pledged to contribute thousands of volunteer hours and will donate an estimated $500,000 to environmental causes nationwide this year.
Albertsons is one of the world's largest food and drug retailers. The company's divisions and subsidiaries operate over 2,500 stores in 37 states across the U.S. and employ over 240,000 associates. Its banners include Albertsons, Acme, Shaw's, Jewel-Osco, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, and Star Markets, as well as Super Saver and Bristol Farms, which are operated independently.
