CLEVELAND, OH, - The numbers are in and the employees from Alcan's (NYSE: AL) Sebree Plant and members of the Henderson, Kentucky community came out on top of Alcan's America Recycles Day (ARD) contest by collecting and recycling 62,040 aluminum beverage cans. The proceeds from the recycled cans were donated by Alcan to the "Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes" program to help build Habitat homes in the Henderson community. Other participating communities included Berea, Kentucky; Cleveland, Ohio; Greensboro, Georgia; Oswego, New York; and Russellville, Kentucky.

The total number of aluminum beverage cans collected during the Alcan ARD contest was over 200,000. Recycling dollars raised by each participating community were matched by Alcan's corporate office in Cleveland, Ohio. An additional $5,000 was awarded by Alcan to the Habitat affiliate in the Henderson, Kentucky community as a grand prize for collecting the most cans among all participating communities. Alcan's total contribution to Habitat is a sensational $12,330.

The contest, which began on Labor Day and ran through November 17th, had Alcan employees collecting and recycling used aluminum beverage cans as part of the company's sponsorship and support of ARD, which was held November 15th, is a national effort focused on creating and maintaining awareness for recycling and its benefits.

"The real heroes of this extremely successful collection program were all the community residents, organizations and businesses who are helping to build the American Dream for those in need by recycling aluminum beverage cans," said Martha Brooks, Senior Vice President, Alcan Inc. "As you can see, Alcan's America Recycles Day Contest was a win-win for both the communities and for the environment. We thank everyone who participated to make every can count."

The aluminum can is the most valuable and the most recycled beverage container. Producing recycled aluminum saves 95 percent of the energy used to make aluminum from raw materials. Unlike other beverage containers, the average beverage can itself has more than 50 percent recycled content.

Brooks said the company plans to sponsor the contest next year with even greater success.
