Alcoa Lafayette Operations Receives Safety Achievement Award

LAFAYETTE, Ind - Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that for the third consecutive year, its Lafayette, Indiana, Operations received a safety achievement award in the Owner's category for efforts toward ensuring the safety of contractor employees by the Metro Indianapolis Coalition for Construction Safety (MICCS), one of the largest contractor safety coalitions in the United States. Lafayette is the only industrial facility in Indiana to receive the award in the past three years. MICCS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving zero injury on construction job sites and it represents more than 900 owner and contractor companies throughout Indiana.

Alcoa's Lafayette plant produces aerospace components and aluminum extrusions and tubes for customers worldwide.

Some of the criteria used by the award panel in selecting Alcoa include:

  • Injury statistics of contractors over a three-year period

  • Management commitment to safety

  • Safety roles and responsibilities for contracted projects

  • Safety planning and contractor safety prequalification process

  • Monitoring and reviewing contractor safety performance

    In addition, MICCS identified the following six items that demonstrated Lafayette's outstanding contractor safety program.

  • Documented pre-job environment, health and safety review

  • Contractor process training

  • Contractor hours worked reporting

  • Contractor EHS database management system

  • Tool inventory process for shutdowns

  • Lafayette's safety and health website contractor page

    "This award by one of the major contractor safety organizations in the U.S. is recognition of our commitment and effort to ensure the safety of contractors while performing work at our plant," said Robert Morrison, Lafayette Operations Manager.
