PITTSBURGH - Alcoa Foundation today announced that it has awarded $30,000 in grants to American Red Cross chapters in Florida as part of an effort to help communities devastated by Hurricane Charley.

The grants are part of Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation's longstanding commitment to providing support to victims of natural disasters in Alcoa communities worldwide.

In Polk County, an area that had gone 44 years without suffering the effects of a major hurricane, Alcoa Foundation awarded a $20,000 disaster relief fund grant to the American Red Cross chapter. In addition, Alcoa Foundation awarded a $10,000 disaster relief grant to the American Red Cross of Central Florida. Alcoa operates two facilities in the region: an Engineered Products facility in Plant City and a Kawneer architectural products service center in Orlando, employing a total or nearly 250 people.

Hurricane Charley's 145 mph winds left little standing in its wake affecting power, gasoline, water and food supplies and causing 2.5 million people to be evacuated as it made landfall on August 13. American Red Cross officials estimate that the relief and recovery effort will become one the largest in the organization's history.
