Amgen Awards National Merit Scholarships To Children Of Two Scientists

Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) today awarded four-year Amgen Foundation Scholarships to children of two Amgen scientists. The $16,000 scholarships are provided in cooperation with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The scholarship recipients are:
Jennifer H. Lin, who attends Westlake High School in Westlake Village, and daughter of Dr. Fu-Kuen Lin, discoverer of Amgen's breakthrough anemia drug, EPOGEN® (Epoetin alfa).
The scholarships will be used to assist in covering tuition costs at the university or college of their choice.
"Amgen commends these students for their outstanding efforts," said Kevin Sharer, Chief Executive Officer and President. "We look to students such as these to inspire other students to pursue academic excellence."
The Amgen Foundation Scholarship Program was established in 1995 by the Amgen Foundation in cooperation with the NMSC, to acknowledge and honor achievements of graduating seniors who demonstrate a dedication to reaching their academic goals. To date, 15 scholarships have been awarded, including those announced today.
"Education is an important focal point of giving for the Amgen Foundation, and Amgen is firmly committed to supporting the educational needs of our staff member's children," said Ed Garnett Vice President, Human Resources. "It is truly gratifying to reward such dedicated students, enabling them to continue in their pursuit of higher education."
Each year, Amgen awards scholarships to children of staff members in the United States and Puerto Rico who achieved the status of a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Finalists are selected by the NMSC, which evaluates each student's academic record through high school, significant activities and contributions to the school and community, standardized test scores, the school's recommendation of the candidate and the student's self-description of interests and goals.
If there are fewer than two finalists, the top two students, as selected by the NMSC, receive scholarships. To qualify as a finalist, students must be graduating seniors who have taken the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year.
In addition to the Amgen Foundation Scholarship Program, Amgen supports education through a number of other programs including the Amgen Award for Teacher Excellence Program, which recognizes teachers for their exemplary contributions to education, and the Science Grants Program, which, during the 1999 school year, provided more than $170,000 in funding for science projects in greater Ventura County schools.
