DUBLIN, Ky., - Ashland Energy Services and Ashland Environmental Services, business units of Ashland Distribution Company, were selected by Kennametal Inc. (NYSE:KMT), North America's leading industrial toolmaker, to provide energy management and waste management services for the company's 32 manufacturing and commercial facilities in the United States. Ashland Distribution Company is a division of Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH).

Under a comprehensive set of services to Kennametal, Ashland Energy Services has strategically positioned the company to capture savings by managing its electricity and natural gas needs. Ashland performs ongoing review of supplier proposals and contracts, conducts strategic planning in the changing deregulated market, manager natural gas price risk and handles the purchasing, supply and transportation management of natural gas and electricity at Kennametal sites. Through an alliance partner, Malcolm Pirnie, Ashland also has successfully analyzed Kennametal's larger manufacturing facilities to identify energy conservation and demand-side reduction opportunities.

Environmental services provided by Ashland include profiling of Kennametal's waste streams and the transportation and appropriate disposal of its hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Ashland has an industry-leading reputation for offering these services as a value-added benefit to its customers for more than 20 years. It also is recognized for an innovative training program that assists customers in following waste management regulations and helps them stay knowledgeable of changing requirements.

Mark Steele, vice president and director for Kennametal, said he was impressed with Ashland's thoroughness and understanding of the economics and regulatory climate surrounding the electric and natural gas markets. "Ashland's energy management services are enabling us at Kennametal to focus on our manufacturing core-competencies and eliminated the need for internal staff to monitor and react to all the changes occurring daily in the energy marketplace," Steele said.

Steele was also impressed with Kennametal's ability to leverage its spend by negotiating with more than one service business of Ashland.

Kennametal is always exploring ways to leverage its spending by consolidating vendors to stay ahead of our competitors and remain focused on our customers," he said. "Ashland not only provided one-stop shopping for energy and environmental services, but also provided us with a variety of products and options through their chemical divisions as well as their APAC highway construction group and Valvoline motor oil business."

Sheri S. Tackett, director of energy services for Ashland Distribution Company, said, "We offer various professional service solutions so that our customers can improve their efficiency and enhance their success. We're excited to see customers like Kennametal discovering our diverse and growing capabilities and also realizing the potential for successful business relationships with the entire family of Ashland companies."

Kennametal is the No. 1 tooling-solutions provider in North America and No. 2 in the world, according to annual sales. It has more than 12,000 employees worldwide and makes and markets a host of metal-cutting tools and mining and highway construction equipment.
