Boise Cascade Donates Plywood to Build Homes for Tsunami Victims

BOISE, Idaho - Boise Cascade announced today that it has donated five containers of plywood to Timber for Aceh to help build homes for displaced victims of the tsunami that hit southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. The five containers will provide enough plywood to help build homes for over 100 families. Donating alternative building materials to the stricken area will also help prevent illegal logging in the last remaining biologically diverse, lowland tropical rainforest and in the coastal mangrove forest in Sumatra. The mangrove forests are critical to mitigating losses from future tsunamis and hurricanes.

The Timber for Aceh project is a collaborative effort between World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, American Forest & Paper Association, and international reconstruction organizations to support sustainable reconstruction of tsunami-stricken homes and businesses. Under the project, imported wood products from sustainably-logged forests will be used in many aspects of reconstruction. For example, the plywood donated by Boise is manufactured with wood coming from sustainable forests in North America, certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®.

The plywood donated by Boise came from their Kettle Falls, Washington, plywood mill and was shipped out of the Port of Tacoma in December. It is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia's Aceh province in time to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the tsunami tragedy.

"This donation allows Boise to help people reestablish their homes and, at the same time, help protect very special forests," said Rob McNutt, Boise's vice president of investor relations and public policy. "We applaud the World Wildlife Fund for providing the leadership on this initiative."

"We are proud to be the source of this donation," said Chris Seymour, Boise's Kettle Falls mill manager. "It's a great experience to be able to help people rebuild their lives in a way that will also protect the environment."
